Hyper Masculanized Religion

Posted by gargi on 21 Jan 2004 | Tagged as: India

I read this amazing article in Outlook. Author C.M.Naim talks about how Islam was amuch a part of his life while he was growing up. And how it was kind, gentle, non-demanding and non-intrusive. And he talks about how he “learnt” his religion - not from the Mullah or organized clergy but from his [...]

Money can’t be eaten

Posted by gargi on 21 Jan 2004 | Tagged as: And Finally ...

Only after the last tree has been cut down
Only after the last river has been poisoned
Only after the last fish has been caught
Only then you will find out that money cannot be eaten
- ancient Cree philosophy.

All that Glitters is not Gold

India Shining is the new campaign by the Government. Aimed towards the urban dweller, primarily. That talks about the current economic feel good factor. But as a trained economist I see some trends that are truly worrying. They are, in no particular order of importance:
Low Interest Rates. While this may have been a boost for [...]

The modern day Asuras’

Posted by gargi on 12 Jan 2004 | Tagged as: India

In Early Aryan Mythology there is a constant battle between two sets of celestial beings. The Devas, or the Gods, and the Asuras and the Demons. Incidentally the Persian myths have the Asurs as the Gods, and the Devas as the Demons.
The predominant image of the Asuras was that of attacking the ashrams of the [...]

Yesterday dad got discharged - he would say released - from the hospital.
As hospitals go, Holy Spirit is a wonderful place. Nurses and doctors and the staff focused on healing.
They day i brought him into the hospital (the first). they rushed him into the ICU, began the treatment, and then came and whispered to me, [...]

The Lost City of Atlantis

When I was growing up, my father's major obsessions was lost civilizations, and glories of the past. A considerable amount of his pin money - money left over after running the household - would go on stuff like Erich von Daniken, Charles Berlitz, Immanuel Velikovsky - men who have alternatively been called charlatans as well [...]

High Moral Quicksand

Posted by gargi on 04 Jan 2004 | Tagged as: India

There was this article on new year’s day that i read while i was at the hospital. If dad had seen it his heart would have probably hit 500.
It was about a retired professor called John Itty, from somewhere in the backwaters of Kerala, who made a police complaint about a man and a woman [...]

Dad in Hospital

On the first, dad got admitted to the ICU of the local hospital. His heart beat was around 260 (normal rate: 75)
The doctors and nurses are excellent. They have stabilised him and brought him back to normal. But he has a fair few complications. He is severely diabetic, has high blood pressure and is severely [...]

Person of the Year

Posted by gargi on 01 Jan 2004 | Tagged as: India

For me this year is marked by one person, whose belief in what should be right, led to his death.
Satyendra Dubey. Ironical, because Satyendra - in Sanskrit means the Lord of Truth. Rarely do you see someone living up to the weight bestowed by their name. But Satyandra Dubey did.
He spoke out - not to [...]
