Money can’t buy you love

   Posted by: gargi    in India

Or can it. there are heart’s in the air. there are roses everywhere. everyone is getting a card, or an sms or a something wishing them a happy valentines’ day

This year Indians are spending close to 2500 Crores just this month on Love, says the latest Outlook.

And why shouldn’t it. After Diwali and Christmas, it is the most in your face event. It is every bloody where.

There are hawkers selling heart shaped balloons on the streets, the local society has put up hearts everywhere. there are hearts at all the coffee shops, restraunts and bars. there are billboards screaming at you. local radio giving you the speil. advertisers coming up with special campaigns. card sellers making a killing. jewellery stores with special schemes.

It’s amazing how in a short span of maybe 10 years the marketeers have so completely taken over an otherwise arbid day.

Another interesting insight from my students. I asked them if they were doing something speical. they gave me that ‘huh. wrong generation” look! said that they hated the damn thing. (typical media attitude to their own creation, and that’s even before they start working). But that the only thing that may make them celebrate would be the Shiv Sena protesting outside the college.

Reining in the IIM’s

   Posted by: gargi    in India

Why would a Government that wants to actively practise disinvestment, because it believes that it is not the Government’s job to run a business - get so actively involved in education.

What competence does a government have to interfere in the running of institutions.

The latest salvo fired by Mr.Joshi - the education minister is to reduce the fees of the IIM’s from 2 odd lakhs to under Rs. 30,000. there seems to be a routine monotony with which Mr.Joshi attacks our educational institutions.

If the government is truly worried about making educaion accessible to all they should probably start with ensuring that every child in the country goes to school. screwing around with the IIM’s is not really going to help.
