Spineless Posturing
One of the saddest things I saw on Television yesterday was the former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee talking to journalists.
Somehow he looked tireder, more jaded, less shining and came out as distinclty lacking in either moral fibre or a spinal cord. All his life Vajpayee has been a loyal member of the RSS. When Govindacharya called him a Mukhauta or a mask - he probably wasn’t too off the mark. For it is impossible for a person to be a member of an organisation from the age of 17 to 70+ - and not believe in either their core values or their methods.
When questioned about Sonia Gandhi’s withdrawal as candidate for PM - all he had to say was she shouldn’t become the Prime Minister. Nothing more. Nothing less. When asked what he thougt of Sushma “Kaikeyi” Swaraj and Uma”Shoorpanaka”Bharati’s tantrums after the BJP lost power - his response - that is the past. With such vision and grace - he resembles Dritarashtra- the blind father of the Kauravas - as opposed to his supposed role model - Bheeshma.
Ifthis the statesman that the BJP was projecting - it is no wonder that India felt the need to outsource the top job.
If spineless posturing seems like an oxymoron - so is Mr.Vajpayees - a contradiction in terms of public persona and political beliefs. One would have hoped that he would have shown a bit more spine and grace while going out. But that was not to be.
