The Left has decided to make its support to the UPA government even more conditional than it already is. Every major step forward in the last 12 odd months has seen this kind of ‘gun to the head behaviour’. A whole lot of cattle trading results. And then a watered down version of wthe original idea gets passed.
Maybe it is time that the Government called the bluff. Call for elections. Ask for a clear mandate. It is most likely that the Congress will get it.
There are many reasons why elections may work in the Congress favour.
a) the economy is booming.
b) so is the stock market
c) The BJP is in the process of auto canibalizing itself.
d) who will vote for the Left – apart from Kerala and WB.
e) Lalloo is severely weakened.
And finally it is probably cheaper to hold elections this year, than this time next year!
Hey, the BJP government made the same mistake of calling early elections…look where that got them. Never underestimate the Indian voter (nor assume that you have your pulse on the Indian electorate). I think it can be safely said that democracy in this country is ridiculously complex, beyond the lay- and non-layperson’s comprehnesion…. Honestly, the best thing for this country would a Congress-BJP combine, as hilarious as that sounds. They are both in agreement over economic reform policies and oppose each other on most other fronts. This will mean consensus and debate on the appropriate issues….oh stop laughing , I can always daydream can’t I?
