I was skipping through channels today and chanced across Hungama – the childrens’ channel. Govinda was gyrating with some semi nude babe – the movie called Joru ka Ghulam

What kind of Children’s viewing is this?

er. what exactly are Hungama thinking putting Givinda and Joru ka Gulam up on the channel anyway? I mean, of course it plain sucks that they had one of those songs playing. But even if they had one of the more “wholesome” parts of a Govinda film running….um, which parents (or kids) are they trying to woo again?

Here in the US, we often have to keep track of what our children are watching as well, but at least the children’s channels are for the children.

Vague – jhoru ka ghulam – the very term conjures up derogatory sexist references. slave to a wife – is not the nicest thing to call a man in INdia. Bimbette with big eyes falls for hero. hero protects and defends her. every so often they take off most of their clothes and gyrate.
Yo! what is it that we are imparting to the next generation.

    Hi Apostle John
one of the things that i do like about western broadcasting systems is their watershed time before ‘adult’ programming cannot be shown. i also respect the way most broadcasters have introduced non stereotypical rolemodels for children. In India, unfortunately, television is so commercialised that broadcasters don’t seem to realise that they have a social role to play as well.

I hope that change comes soon.
