When she tried to shrug him off, Bhura plunged in his fingers into her eyes gouging out her right eye and wounding the left.

This was the story of a nurse raped by a ward boy. The judge asks the victim to consider an offer of marriage from the abuser. The lady said no.

This is the 5th line from the 23rd post on this site. Is it my 23rd blog, not really. i was earlier on the 20six site and had to manually move the posts one by one. And as such this is entered as post number 23 in the WP powered blog. Why am I regurgitating old posts? Well, because Shivam Vij of Mall Road tagged me. A new meme is going around infecting blogdom. And i am its latest victim 🙂

It is kind of strange that abuse of women is a theme that i keep coming back to with monotonous efficiency. I wish i didn’t come across so much of violence against women, and didnt’ have to blog about the anger that i feel everytime i read about one of these.

I am supposed to Tag 5 other unsuspecting bloggers. I am apologising in advance to them. all hate mail to be sent to the originator of the meme :). These are the rules (whacked from Shivam’s site that explain’s what you have to do:

1. delve into your blog archive.
2. find your 23rd post (or closest to).
3. find the fifth sentence (or closest to).
4. post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
5. tag five people to do the same.

I tag Charu, peter, vulturo, tarun, kamesh.

But, it is quite a conincidence that his 23rd post is on caste, and mine on abuse of women!

  1. Interesting. Seems you didn’t notice that I had already tagged Vulturo and he had picked up my tag.
Digging into the past is a refreshing exercise, no?

  2. Even a 1000 blogs devoted entierly to the atrocities against women wont be able to cover all the atrocities that must be happning to them in a single hour …. I have pondered over this issue over many times and the only solution that comes to my mind which should coz a dent in the frequency of such events is .. fear.. A man will not respond to anything else .. but brutal fear. like what i heard happens in Saudi .. if a man is caught stealing even a small thing then they handicap him and leave him .. similarly if a man rapes a woman he should be subjected to brutal torture or death .. Or maybe one should start a secret police like the gestapo who will hunt down such protrestors and treat them on their own terms ..i am not saying that such things should be made a notm coz there other humanitarian issues that will crop up .. but then put forth an example to society to instill that element of fear in the minds of men .. only that might able to deter them .. coz things are going way out of control .. every second day one reads about stories of girls less than 5 years of age being raped .. society is rottenning at a rapid rate and the stench will soon be unbearable…

  3. Shivam
i am sure that i saw the vulturo tag but didn’t notice it … if you see what i mean.
but it is still amazing that u and i return to our pet peeves….. caste and women’s rights. (it is probably reversed coz i post quite a bit about caste, and u do about gender) so if this tag was 25 instead of 23 what would be the result:)

  4. hi harsh
in saudi arabia, as in most islamic nations, you need witnesses to prove that a woman has been raped. it is only when that happens will the guilty be prosecuted. otherwise the woman will be stoned to death for adultery. coz a woman’s testimony is considered to be a quarter that of a man’s. how may rapists will rape in front of witnesses ?

in india i wish that the law acts faster. society does not condemn the woman, and that religious reform takes place to ensure that atleast in our rituals women are treated as equal to men. it will go a long way in solving the treatment of women. rape after all is less about sex and more about power. if women are on equal footing with men then the probability of rap may reduce!
