Reading Recommendations 19th November

The NYT has a good piece on the Universal Basic Income Movement. I have been reading a fair bit on UBI, and when i read pieces like this, on Amazon’s Last Mile, it becomes all the more apparent why UBI will cease being a fringe economic idea, and will be adopted in the near future. Primarily to stave off social disorder.

There are two very good pieces on the media, and the future of media earnings. The first looks at the growing anxiety in the media in dealing with audiences who don’t want to pay. The second looks at Amazon backing out of launching an online subscription TV service because they won’t make money. It makes me wonder about the boom in the media, right now, fuelled by ‘burning’ vast amounts of cash and no revenue model.

Closer home, the Rajasthan CM Vasundra Raje Scindia, seems to be casting doubts on the competence of the Censor Board in requesting the censorship of Padmavati, a commercial film, based on protests by a group that hasn’t seen the film.  The Hindu looks at the 3 young men giving the BJP sleepless nights in Gujarat. The Indian Express has a good series on those left behind, after the 26/11 massacre.

The power of money – China’s brute financial power prevents Hollywood from casting Richard Gere, because of his involvement with the Tibetan cause. And, as big business and rich governments increase their stronghold, we may end up seeing a lot more regulation in the media, especially in terms of who owns what (or what all).

And, finally, if like me, you are looking for a  good tablet to replace your last one – here is something that may help you decide – i am still undecided.
