Does coming from a certain &#8216;background&#8217; absolve you of guilt ?<\/p>\n<p>So why this outpouring of grief over <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.in\/search?hl=en&amp;client=opera&amp;rls=en&amp;hs=y8W&amp;q=kobad+ghandy&amp;btnG=Search&amp;meta=&amp;aq=f&amp;oq=\">Kobad Ghandy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.co.in\/news?client=opera&amp;rls=en&amp;q=Roman%20Polanski&amp;sourceid=opera&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=en&amp;tab=wn\">Roman Polanski<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.Ghandy is<span style=\"text-decoration:line-through;\"> the member<\/span> one of the leading lights of an <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communist_Party_of_India_(Maoist)\">organization<\/a><\/strong> that has been unleashing bloody terror in parts of \u00a0India. While one <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tehelka.com\/story_main42.asp?filename=Ne031009coverstory.asp\">accepts<\/a><\/strong> that conditions in these areas are terrible, and development has not trickled down and feudalism persists, the Naxals are adding to the misery of the local populations. They are virtually holding people in areas controlled by them <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/naxalwatch.blogspot.com\/\">hostage<\/a><\/strong> in their squalor, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tehelka.com\/story_main28.asp?filename=Ne310307_I_left_CS.asp\">extorting<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianexpress.com\/news\/fear-despair-grip-maharashtra-village-with-first-woman-victim-of-naxal-violence\/435961\/0\">murdering<\/a><\/strong> and terrorizing local populations.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.Polanski &#8211; how does one put this nicely ? &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/2009\/oct\/04\/roman-polanski-sex-case-backlash\">raped and sodomized<\/a><\/strong> a 13 year old after drugging her.<\/p>\n<p>What has been strange in both cases has been the outpouring of sympathy. I wonder why we aren&#8217;t equally &#8216;sympathetic&#8217; towards<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/2009\/09\/27\/stories\/2009092750270100.htm\">Chhatradhar Mahato<\/a><\/strong>.  or even towards <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Glitter\">Gary Glitter <\/a><\/strong>. Afterall, they are in the same space of activity.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder whether leading publications will publish <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/audio-news-video\/india\/The-Kobad-Ghandy-I-knew\/456975\/Article1-456970.aspx\">articles<\/a><\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindu.com\/2009\/10\/07\/stories\/2009100757800100.htm\">Mr Francis Induwar <\/a><\/strong>I knew ?<\/p>\n<p>IT reminds of something my driver told me just after 26\/11 &#8211; when all those candlelight marches were happening around the Taj &#8211; He aasked &#8220;VT mein candle nahin jala raha koi&#8221;?.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I wonder if we are some other universes&#8217; hell.
