President Musharraf<\/a><\/strong>, yesterday said that he <\/strong>ordered:<\/p>\n

a travel ban on Mukhtar Mai to protect Pakistan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s image abroad. Gen Musharraf said Mukhtar Mai, the victim of a punchayat-ordered gang rape, was being taken to the United States by foreign non-government organisations \u00e2\u20ac\u0153to bad-mouth Pakistan\u00e2\u20ac\u009d over the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153terrible state\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s women. He said NGOs are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Westernised fringe elements\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which \u00e2\u20ac\u0153are as bad as the Islamic extremists\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.Musharraf said atrocities are perpetrated daily against women in developing nations round the world – \u00e2\u20ac\u0153in Kashmir and many other places\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to project the bad image of Pakistan,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he told the journalists\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 club.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I am a realist. Public relations is the most important thing in the world,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said, adding that media misperceptions would discourage tourists from travelling to Pakistan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
