Microsoft created an &#8216;intelligent&#8217; bot, that was designed to have conversations with millennials,\u00a0adapt and have more conversation. Called Tay, it had a persona that was young and bubbly, and Microsoft &#8211; like any proud parent &#8211; wanted to talk about it. This is how they <a href=\"https:\/\/tay.ai\/\"><strong>introduced<\/strong> <\/a>it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tay is an artificial intelligent <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Chatterbot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chatterbot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">chat bot<\/a> developed by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=47.6395972222,-122.12845&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=47.6395972222,-122.12845 (Microsoft)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Microsoft&#8217;s<\/a> Technology and Research and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Bing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Bing<\/a> teams to experiment with and conduct research on conversational understanding. Tay is designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and playful conversation. The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets, so the experience can be more personalized for you.<\/p>\n<p>Tay is targeted at 18 to 24 year old in the US.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What could possibly go wrong ? As Tay herself put it (and yes, it seemed to be a female persona)<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReflectingVoid\">@ReflectingVoid<\/a> The more Humans share with me the more I learn <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WednesdayWisdom?src=hash\">#WednesdayWisdom<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TayTweets (@TayandYou) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TayandYou\/status\/712832314619736064\">March 24, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>And, this is how Microsoft expected Tay to learn through <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tay.ai\/ThingsToDo\">conversations<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tay.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4805\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4805\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tay.jpg?resize=565%2C575\" alt=\"tay\" width=\"565\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And learn she did, but all the things you would want to keep your kid away from. Microsoft&#8217;s plan of sending Tay to <strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Twitter<\/a> <\/strong>to learn would be the equivalent of humans sending their 15 year old to an especially seedy bar where bigots high on testosterone gather, to learn socialisation and appropriate social behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Given the playground in which they chose to experiment, \u00a0given the nature of conversations on Twitter, and the kind of unmasked bigotry and misogyny that exists, it took all of 15 hours for &#8216;cute&#8217; little bot to turn into a <strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Holocaust denial\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holocaust_denial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Holocaust denying<\/a>,<\/strong> racist, sexist, bot. And, before you say naaaa &#8211; cannot happen to real people, think of all the kids that ISIS has managed to programme simply using social media. Kids from good families, brought up with the right values &#8212; but, lonely and looking for &#8216;company&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is actually scary. Microsoft can try and reprogramme Tay.
