We have taken all the negatives and turned them into\npositives \u2013 learned to live together, ensured food security, lifted millions\nout of poverty, and are ready to take the next step towards peace and\nprosperity.&nbsp; In this path India became\nboth a nuclear and a space power \u2013 and a role in the world as the enemy of\nnone, if not, a friend to all. As India moves ahead, carrying the aspirations\nand hopes of 1.3 billion, her challenges in the years to come will be tough. And,\nno where will this be seen more than in education and training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest advantage that India\nhas, is her much touted demographic dividend. In 2018, India\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/india\/demographics_profile.html\">median age is\n27.9<\/a><\/strong>, compared to &nbsp;China,\nwhere the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/countries\/median-age\/\">median age is 37.<\/a><\/strong>4,\nor the USA at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/countries\/median-age\/\">38.1 years<\/a><\/strong>,\nor Germany at 47.1 years old. We are a young nation, because our people are\nyoung. Amongst other countries in Asia,&nbsp;\nPakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Malaysia have marginally higher\npercentage of younger people, but the sheer numbers from India overwhelm any decision\nmaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/a.png?w=640\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6476\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mospi.nic.in\/sites\/default\/files\/publication_reports\/Youth_in_India-2017.pdf\">Source<\/a><\/strong>\n: youth in India, CSO, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, GoI<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we thin slice the population\ndata further,&nbsp; two more data points\nemerge<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/india\/demographics_profile.html\">. 27.34% of\nIndia is under 14, and 18%<\/a><\/strong> fall under the 15-24 age bracket. It\nis these two figures that the Government should pay heed to, from a policy perspective,\nbecause it these that is going to impact the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the core of decision making, has\nto be a focus on relevant education. For too long, policy discussion on education\nin India has been dominated by one subject, that neither provides skills, nor\nleaning to deal with the future world \u2013 and that subject is history. We are so\nstuck in figuring whether history is mythology, or mythology is history, that\nwe forget that both pursuits are higher level pursuits \u2013 research on which can\nbe undertaken by those interested, when able. The core focus of the debate\nought to be on education and skills that empower generation next to aspire to\nfill next gen jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With machine learning, artificial\nintelligence, and robotics replacing human jobs, India is still stuck with an\neducation system that delivers people for an industrial age. We are taught to\nlearn by rote, and perform by rote, in a world that demands skills, and\nreasoning, that is fuzzy. In a world which demands oral communication skills,\nwe are still focused on written skills. And, while one isn\u2019t berating the need\nfor written skills, it is imperative that we also deliver softer skills. In a\nmulti lingual republic like India, students must learn as much spoken language\nas possible, to be able to move between states looking for a job. Numeracy\nskills must include being able to read financial data, and grasp numbers. Across\nall schools, a subject on citizenship has to be introduced, that tells students\nhow to live in a multi cultural Republic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overhaul of the system has to\nbe ground up, not top down. We need to start fixing education from the point\nthe child enters school for the first time. A top down approach, as it is now,\nwill ensure that most of the students are unable to grasp what is being taught\nat higher levels. Teacher training and retraining needs to be undertaken on a\nwar footing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be truly independent, India has\nto empower her people with education that is relevant; that helps people break\nout of their class barriers and move up social rankings. To do that India has\nto move up the value chain in what it produces \u2013 that also means new types of\njobs. Education must prepare the young for jobs of tomorrow, not jobs of\nyesterday. It has to help them hope and aspire for equality, riches, and\ngreatness.
