And, the one thing is clear \u2013 more of us want to\nlearn English, in our own inimitable style, to be seen as equal participants in\na growing economy. English is seen as the key that unlocks doors to opportunity\nand is a passport out of poverty and into the middle class. It is about the\naspiration of Indians, equal for the first time in millennia, that wants to\nadopt a foreign language to communicate with each other without the baggage of\nthe past. And, it works mainly because most of us have no emotional, cultural,\nor historical baggage with English. Yes, we had emotional baggage with the\nBritish \u2013 they colonised us, enslaved us, set our economic story back by a\ncentury or more. But, we threw them out, and kept their language as part\ncompensation. It is estimated that over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-20500312\">125 million Indians speak\nEnglish<\/a><\/strong> and a lot more mix it with their language, to create new\nlanguages \u2013 Hinglish, Tamlish, Banglish and more. When families move out of\npoverty, into the lower rungs of the middle class one of the first things they\ntry and afford is English education for their children. Because, English\neducation will get their children higher up the middle-class ladder, faster.\nAnd, it is in this context that one should see <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/english-language-is-a-disease-left-behind-by-the-british-says-vice-president-venkaiah-naidu\/story-XAnC6vsHwe2TnVq2Gd6BsO.html\">the\nVice-President M Venkaiah Naidu\u2019s statement on Hindi Diwas<\/a><\/strong>that English is a disease that the\nBritish left behind, and we should get rid of this disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Indians don\u2019t see English as a\ncurse. They see it as a foothold to climb up the ladder of success. And,\ngetting rid of English, as the vice president suggested, to promote Hindi is\nfraught with multiple issues. Primarily the resistance of non-Hindi speaking\nstates to what they see as imposition of Hindi and North Indian hegemony on the\nrest of India. While there is merit in the argument that children who learn in\nthe mother tongue, learn better and faster, the fact remains that state\nlanguage schools is purist, and rarely the dialect spoken by the student.&nbsp; There are 22 major languages, and 720 major\ndialects in the country. A child whose mother tongue is Maithali will be better\noff learning in that language, than Hindi \u2013 the state language; or a child who\nmother tongue is Konkani will be better off learning in Konkani than the state\nlanguage Marathi. It would be good if the medium of instruction was changed to\nthe local dialect, but there are too many emotional linguistic issues around\nthis. in a country where language and identity are intermingled, it is easier\nto work with a foreign language, learning which has little bearing on identity.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the terribly tricky\npolitical hot potato that language imposition is, there are very good business\nreasons why English should not be dumped. World over, English is the language\nfor business. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/capital\/story\/20170317-the-international-companies-using-only-english\">Multi\nnational corporations across the non-English speaking world<\/a><\/strong> are\nadopting English as the link language in their organisations. Nissan and Honda,\nboth Japanese companies with strong Japanese traditions have English as their\nlanguage of official communication. Siemens, a German company, and Sodexo a\nFrench company have switched to English to handle global business.&nbsp; Not only that people in these countries are\npreparing their children for a world where the de facto language of business is\nEnglish. It is estimated that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/10\/08\/more-than-any-other-foreign-language-european-youths-learn-english\/\">77%\nof primary school students in the EU l<\/a><\/strong>earn English,. While <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2016-05\/27\/c_135393561.htm\">China has\nintroduced English at the primary level<\/a><\/strong>, more and more parents\nare getting their kids to learn the language earlier. There is a direct\ncorrelation between <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/11\/countries-with-better-english-have-better-economies\">English\nskills and national income<\/a><\/strong>. The higher the level of English\nskills, the more the growth in Gross National Income. The Indian experience\nbears it out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given all this and given that India\nhas a competitive advantage because of being the second largest English-speaking\npopulation \u2013 after the United States of America \u2013 it is surprising that people\nlike Mr Naidu want to bury English, and replace it with languages that may not\nbe so conducive to business. It is not an either or, it is an and. Mother\ntongue, Indian link languages, other Indian languages are all important. But,\nso is English. Promoting other languages cannot be at the expense of marring\nthe future of millions of Indians. And political dogma should not come in the\nway of securing a better future for the coming generations. In fact, one of the\nfirst things that Adityanath did when he became Chief Minister of Uttar\nPradesh- the home of Hindi &#8211; was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/politics\/yogi-adityanath-introduces-english-from-nursery-level-in-schools-delivers-tough-message-to-rss-fringe-groups-3374386.html\">to\nintroduce English from the nursery leve<\/a><\/strong>l. He did this because he\nunderstood the aspirations of the people of the state.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways the best thing that\nthe Government can do for languages is to leave them alone.
