The ripples\nof #metoo are still being felt as more women feel empowered to speak up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The #MeToo campaign was catharsis\nfor many women. Especially those who are also on social media. It was a sort of\nglobal sisterhood of shared experiences, an acknowledgement of what other women\nhave gone through, and the courage to share because you know that you are no\nlonger alone. Memories of events that were buried deep have come bubbling to\nthe surface, as women opened the pandora\u2019s box of complaints on sexual\nharassment by men they worked with. &nbsp;Hollywood\nbigwig producer, Harvey Weinstein was the trigger for this avalanche, that soon\nexpanded to cover other industries apart from Hollywood and media. While it has\nbeen harrowing to read these accounts, these brave women who have risked public\nderision \u2013 and in an era of social media they get it in bucketloads \u2013 have\npaved the way for other women dealing with their demons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, the United States of\nAmerica is seeing a professor accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of\nsexually abusing her in the 1980\u2019s. In India, a nun went public with the\nallegations that a bishop of the Catholic Church had been raping her. The\nUnited Kingdom is faced with a series of cases of sexual harassment in\nuniversity campuses. Young women, old women, girls \u2013 the message is clear \u2013 no\nmore. We want to be safe at work, safe on the roads, safe at home. It isn\u2019t too\nmuch to ask for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This movement has now reached\nBollywood. There was a minor tremor that rippled through the industry last\nweek. Actor Tanushree Dutta repeated an allegation from a decade earlier, of\nsexual harassment on the sets of a 2008 film called \u2018Horn Ok Pleassss\u2019. She\naccused co-stars Nana Patekar, and choreographer Ganesh Archarya of creating an\nenvironment that allowed her to be sexually harassed. Her earlier accusations\nin 2008, ended up with her facing mob violence, forfeiting her career, and\ndisappearing from the public eye.&nbsp;\nSurprisingly, in an industry ruled by <em>omerta<\/em>, or code of silence, a decade later, prominent voices \u2013 both\nmale and female \u2013 have begun coming out in her support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest open secrets of\nthe Indian film industries is the presence of the casting couch, and an almost\ntacit acceptance of sex being a currency \u2013 either coerced or given freely \u2013\nduring the process of film making. However, what is not talked about enough is\nthe sheer presence of sexual barricades that exist across industries, coupled\nwith varying levels of harassment. While a combination of the law, and good\npractises are dismantling the barricades gradually, making spaces more gender\nfriendly; there still exists a varying degree of subtle to blatant sexual\nharassment in many workplaces. And, women are pushing back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like every threatened power\nstructure, those who hold power \u2013 mostly men \u2013 are fighting back. And, the\nreason is simple \u2013 survival. These women who have spoken up, are not isolated\ncases. For every woman who shares her experiences, there are possibly thousands\nof others who don\u2019t. Partly it is because they are not ready for it; but in the\nmain it is because the presence of harassment and discrimination are part of\ntheir normal world. &nbsp;&nbsp;Take for example the garment industry in\nIndia. There <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cividep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sexual-Harassment-Report-MahooLyimo-_Oct-2010-35.pdf\">have\nbeen reports<\/a><\/strong> about the large incidence of sexual harassment\nagainst women who work as contract labour. In this environment, it is possible\nthat sexual harassment is seen as the norm- the price one pays to earn one\u2019s\nlivelihood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of #metoo has gone beyond\na hashtag, into being a movement that demands equality, and safe working spaces.\nAs the movement trickles down from corporate offices to the factory floor, and\nbeyond, the idea that you can be in a public space, or at work, without being\nsexually harassed, without facing sexually explicit innuendo, without being\nmade to feel uncomfortable, is gaining ground.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, this to a large extent, comes\nfrom women willing to talk about their trauma, and how they survived it. The\nshame is no longer hers. It is that of the man who harassed. Attitudes are\nchanging so that he is seen not as some overgrown boy man deserving empathy,\nbut as what he really is \u2013 a predator who preys on those less powerful.
