In the film 2001 Space Odyssey, the AI HAL 9000 kills human beings who try to disconnect it. In the popular franchise Terminator, Skynet is a corporation that invents an AI that crushes humanity to create a dystopian future. While we might write these off as the extreme imagination of highly creative and paranoid minds, we need to take the warnings of scientists and technologists slightly more seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/artificial-intelligence-3382507_1280.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/artificial-intelligence-3382507_1280.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"Artificial Intelligence\" class=\"wp-image-6561\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As more and more of us go online,\nand conduct ever increasing numbers of transactions, engagements, and\ninteractions, the great machines learn more about our minute likes and\ndislikes, than we possibly do. And, while it is a great convenience when it\ncomes to shopping, it could have drastic consequences if used to manipulate us\nin other ways. &nbsp;As technology advances,\nand gigantic corporations control more and more of data about us, that they\nspin, churn, and analyse to find out even more about us \u2013 experts across the\nworld have begun to question whether such data in the hands of a few giant\ntechnology monopolies is good for humankind at large, and democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quantum of data that we give\naway daily to companies that track our interests and engagement; and Artificial\nintelligence where machines can make decisions based on various parameters,\nhave been discussed separately. However, every time we use Google to search, or\nAmazon to shop, or Netflix to watch movies \u2013 we are providing more data about\nourselves, that helps the systems learn to offer us better options. Scientists\nand technologies have begun to worry about this. In their view, AI isn\u2019t\nsomething in a distant future, we are already experiencing it, in a limited\nform, now. A recent documentary \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt6152554\/\">Do you Trust this\nComputer<\/a><\/strong>\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;looks at the interconnected worlds of large\ncorporations, big data, machine learning, and AI. Leading technologists, tech\nentrepreneurs and academics call for reflection on where we are going, and what\nwe will find when we get there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elon Musk has been one of the most\nactive voices <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/13\/elon-musk-at-sxsw-a-i-is-more-dangerous-than-nuclear-weapons.html\">cautioning\nus against the dangers of machines growing too intelligent<\/a><\/strong>. He\nhas said that AI is more dangerous than nuclear weapons, and it\u2019s use needs to\nbe regulated. The late Stephen Hawking held similar views. In one of his last\nspeeches in 2017<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/web-summelier\/notes-from-websummit-opening-address-from-stephen-hawking-442bb4305ff4\">,\nhe said<\/a><\/strong> \u201cSuccess in creating effective AI could be the biggest\ninvention of this period of civilization, or the worst\u2026 We just don\u2019t know, so\nwe cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI or ignored by it and\nside-lined, or conceivably destroyed by it\u201d In 2015, Musk and Hawking and many\nothers working in the field of technology \u2013 including the founders of Deep Mind\nAI \u2013 signed an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/ai-open-letter\/?cn-reloaded=1\">open letter<\/a><\/strong>\nasking for research to be conducted on the societal impact of AI. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is not just about gigantic\ncorporations using data and AI to manipulate you to use their product. IT is\nalso about the threat posed to Constitutional Democracy by the concentration of\npower in the hands of digital internet giants, who are researching AI. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/376\/2133\/20180089\">Paul\nNemitz<\/a><\/strong>, Principal advisor to the EU, has sounded a warning bell about\nthe impact of big data, and AI on Democracy. In a recent essay in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/376\/2133\/20180089\">the\nRoyal Society journal<\/a><\/strong>, he argues that democracy is at risk from\nthose who control large AI projects, MNC\u2019s who are already harvesting our data\nfor more intelligence. He accuses the internet giants of thriving on a culture\nof \u2018lawlessness and irresponsibility\u2019. And, he believes that the discussion of\nAI has to go beyond ethics and move into the realm of regulation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, there are 3 main regulatory\nmodels of how we see, data being collected, what machines are learning from\nthis data about our behaviour, and regulation. The first is the American model,\nwhere things are pretty much unregulated. It is believed that digital is a\nspace that allows for free enterprise and ignores the possibility of &nbsp;&nbsp;monopolies. The Cambridge Analytica scandal,\nand accusations of the Russians having manipulated the data to manipulate the\nUS elections, has woken them up to the possibility that data can be misused by\ncorporations and countries. President Trump has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/8\/29\/17791292\/trump-tech-companies-threat-google-twitter-facebook\">threatened\nregulation<\/a><\/strong>, but hasn\u2019t followed through on it. Yet. &nbsp;The next is the Chinese model, where the\nCommunist party seems fully aware of what it can do with the data, and the\ndirection of AI research \u2013 and is controlling both with an iron fist \u2013 both in\nterms of using the data in terms of keeping tabs on the population, and in\nterms of developing AI as a tool of aggression. And, lastly is the European\nmodel, where the EU has put some checks on the massive data stores that large\nmultinationals like Facebook, Amazon, and Google are able to collect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India has yet to evolve how it is\ngoing to deal with data, and how data can be manipulated to manipulate us. As\nmachines become faster, as they can process more quicker, and as more and more\npeople get on to internet, and use it for a variety of activities, more data will\nbe available which will allow those who control this data to manipulate the\naudience better. There is of course, the right to privacy. But, when it comes\nto digital footprints that we leave behind daily, that gives systems more\ninsights on us, there is not much that can be done in the model that we have\ntoday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To assume that a system this\npowerful, will continue without regulatory oversight is na\u00efve. Regulation is\ncoming, the only question is when, and how strict.
