Nor is it restricted to the\npoor and poorly educated. It is rife in over a third of the households and\nseems to be Indian society\u2019s best kept secrets. Is it time for a me too\nmovement that openly shares the trauma of physical, sexual and emotional abuse\nby the partner who is supposed to nurture and cherish the wife for eternity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/article\/we-sent-her-back-fearing-society-says-family-tn-woman-allegedly-killed-dowry-92053\">32\nyear old Porukudi<\/a><\/strong> was found beaten and burnt to death in\nRudrapuram in Tamil Nadu. Around the same time, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/dehradun\/dowry-death-alleged-in-rudrapur\/articleshow\/66659637.cms\">Anita\nfrom <\/a><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;Uttarakhand\nwas found dead in mysterious conditions.. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orissapost.com\/woman-killed-family-claims-dowry-death\/\">Annapurna\nfrom Odisha<\/a><\/strong>, a new married bride was found dead. In all the\nthree cases the parents accused the in-laws of torturing and killing their\ndaughter for dowry. Extorting Dowry is a crime under the Indian penal code, yet\nthe custom continues, often accompanied by violence, abuse, and in extremes\ncases, death. In India, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and\nCrime (UNODC) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/documents\/data-and-analysis\/GSH2018\/GSH18_Gender-related_killing_of_women_and_girls.pdf\">report\non the global study on homicide<\/a><\/strong>, between 40 to 50% of all female\nhomicides recorded were because of dowry.&nbsp;\nThe report further says that the most dangerous place for most women, is\nthe home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, dowry related violence is the most visible part of violence faced by women in the home, in India. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), domestic violence is a part of almost a third of all families. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rchiips.org\/nfhs\/NFHS-4Reports\/India.pdf\">33% of married women<\/a><\/strong> in India have said they have faced physical abuse in the household. The predominant part of domestic violence is spousal abuse, though other members of the husband\u2019s family may also contribute to the violence.  The NH4 Survey is detailed in its research into domestic violence. It divides up spousal abuse into 3 types Physical, sexual, and emotional abuse (including the threat of violence) and further look at the type of violence that emanates. For example, some people may not consider pushing or pinching as violence, while others may not consider threats as violence. Yet both, by the Government\u2019s own definition are most definitely classified as violence <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calamur.org\/gargi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/SPOUSAL-VIOLENCE.jpg?fit=380%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"domestic violence \" class=\"wp-image-6696\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Indian state has been\nrelatively progressive in the adoption of laws against dowry demands, and\ndomestic violence \u2013 the smallest unit of society, the family, has not been\nequally progressive in reducing the problem of violence. The only place where\nthe Indian state is lagging is on the issue of criminalising marital rape. But\nthat is going to be an uphill task both from the point of view of the backlash\nfrom those who believe that a law criminalising marital rape will destabilise\nthe family; and those who believe that given the nature of sexual contact\nwithin a marriage, rape will be impossible to prove in a court of law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a glimmer of hope here,\nand that is, as the NFHS4 survey shows, that as education increases, the level\nof domestic abuse decreases. Men who have studied till the 12<sup>th<\/sup>\nstandard are far less likely to hit their wives than men who have not studied\nat all. Along with education, what is needed is awareness, and a breaking of\nthe wall of silence that surrounds domestic violence. We neither speak about\nit, nor do we acknowledge it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the problem with domestic violence\nis that happens behind closed doors, and it is too shameful to talk about in\npublic. Most casual violence, such as being slapped for there being less salt\nin the food, or tea being too hot, is not even considered by many as violence.\nAlso, For very many women, domestic violence is normalised by witnessing other\nwomen in their household facing violence. And, it is this normalisation that\nleads to a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rchiips.org\/nfhs\/NFHS-4Reports\/India.pdf\">staggering 51% of women<\/a><\/strong>\nwho faced physical abuse, asserting the husband was justified in hitting\nthem.&nbsp; \n\nJust as the #MeToo movement broke the silence on\nsexual harassment and abuse of power at the work place \u2013 we need a movement\nthat shatters the omerta on domestic violence. An outpouring where ordinary\nwomen can stand up and say, \u201cI was hit. I will be hit no more\u201d and receive\nsupport from others. Domestic violence is not a rarity. A third of all women in\nIndia face it. Children in one third of the families grow up seeing their\nmother being battered.
