I write for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/politics\/floundering-on-communication-governments-post-balakot-disaster-2509211.htm\">CNBC-TV18<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a party that was so good at\ncontrolling the narrative in the pre-2014 scenario, the BJP has been\nfloundering on the communication front. Be it dealing with the agricultural\ncrisis, or with demonetisation; be it dealing with the fall out of GST, or with\nthe job crisis, be it speaking about the economy or about the citizenship\nregister \u2013 the otherwise vocal members of the Government would go strangely\nsilent and disappear from public eye; or worse put out different stories that\nhave no relationship to ground reality. &nbsp;Nothing\nexemplifies this more than the handling of the narrative in the post Pulwama\nattack. At first the Government went silent, then key members went campaigning,\nand while rumours roared about a possible war there was absolute radio silence\nfrom those in charge. It is supposed to help terrorists hide out. They are not\nlikely to be in crowded public areas. And, they don\u2019t have a large \u201cX\u2019 on the\nroof that reads \u201cbad guys with bombs here\u201d. They are not likely to be on\nInstagram, nor are general populations likely to checked in via four square.\nThere is no biometric system that monitors their 9-5 activity. And, they aren\u2019t\nposting minute by minute updates on social media. It would be difficult to know\nexactly how many people there were at the location. Expecting an exact body\ncount would seem, like most, to be an act of futility. And, the simplest thing\nthat the Government could do is to say precisely that, and tell the press that\ngiving out more information would put future operations at risk. And, yet they\nwent silent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the media went to town after the\nPulwama attacks, it just got worse after the Indian Airforce (IAF) strikes in\nBalakot on the 26<sup>th<\/sup> of February. After announcing the strikes, it\nseemed like the Government machinery took a vow of silence about the strike, as\nits members moved off to campaign for the elections; and the media took over\nthe narrative full swing. &nbsp;For the media\nit was Diwali come early. Their anchors could turn up in battle fatigues, they\ncould pretend to understand military strategy, they could have conversations\nwith former armed forces, and they could pretend they knew the difference between\none variant of a Mig and another. But, the cost to India of the Government\ngoing AWOL, and the media going ballistic, is steep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make matters worse, senior\nleaders within the BJP began putting out \u2018guesses\u2019 about the number of\nterrorists killed. Amit Shah, the BJP President,&nbsp; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/politics\/bjp-shoots-itself-in-foot-with-amit-shahs-claim-of-250-killed-in-balakot-strike-gives-ammo-to-opposition-6208011.html\"><strong>250 terrorists were killed;<\/strong><\/a> &nbsp;&nbsp;Agriculture Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abplive.in\/india-news\/amid-debate-agriculture-minister-radha-mohan-singh-says-400-terrorists-killed-in-balakot-strike-934858\"><strong>Radha Mohan Singh claimed<\/strong><\/a> that the\nModi Government retaliated for the 40 CRPF soldiers murdered, by killing 400\nterrorists. While more measured voices tried to clarify, the damage was done. It\ntook 6 days post the air strike for the Air Chief Marshal, BS Dhanoa to <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/defence\/we-dont-count-human-casualties-iaf-chief-bs-dhanoa\/articleshow\/68264164.cms?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=Social_TW&amp;utm_campaign=ETTWMain\"><strong>inform the public<\/strong><\/a> \u201cWe don\u2019t count\nhuman casualties. We count what targets we have hit or not hit,\u201d Which is\nprecisely what the government should have said on the day of the airstrikes. The\nDefence Minister should have been brought into play, to lead from the front,\nand handle the communication. Afterall, part of the Government\u2019s job is\ncommunicating with the people. &nbsp;And, this\nis where they have been found terribly lacking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hyper jingoistic media that sees\nwar as \u2018good for ratings\u2019, and politicians jumping the gun and putting election\nprospects before national interests \u2013 has damaged India. For a group that is\nbusy calling other Indians anti national, and damaging the nation, this is\nexactly what they have done. One of things that has been impacted is India\u2019s\ncredibility in terms of the world at large believing the narrative we put out. Unfortunately,\nthat narrative has been commandeered by a hyper jingoistic media, and\npoliticians who cannot look beyond getting re-elected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things that India needs\nto learn from the west is how they cover war. And, how the entire establishment\nworks together to control a narrative that does not cause panic amongst the\ngeneral public. In India, we have not learned from the post 26\/11 communication\ndebacle. The Government has to set up a machinery to control the Indian\ninterest perspective during times of emergency.
