Most of us had\nbarely heard of her name before last week. And, today she is known pretty much\nacross the world that follows news. Ms Ardern is the 40<sup>th<\/sup> Prime\nMinister of New Zeeland, and earlier known for being the head of state who had\na baby while in office. A socialist, and a progressive, she is also the\nyoungest female leader of a nation. From a quiet, peaceful part of the world \u2013\nwhere there are considerably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weeklytimesnow.com.au\/agribusiness\/sheep\/the-ratio-of-person-to-sheep-in-new-zealand-has-dropped\/news-story\/1a6dbd5575198cb0e70ccb5c2b857f22\"><strong>more sheep than humans<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 there was\nnothing in her background, prepared her for what she had to face last week, and\nshe came out of it exhibiting qualities of leadership that I believed were lost\nforever in the world \u2013 the ability to inspire people to reach within and be the\nbest version of themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of March, an\nAustralian born white terrorist, who was self-radicalised watching youtube\nvideos from far right white supremist groups, walked into the Al Noor Mosque in\nChrist Church, New Zealand, and emptied his automatic weapon into the huddle of\nworshippers. Fifty people died. People who had come into to pray, and were\ndefenceless, were murdered in cold blood, in a terror attack that left\nworshippers dead, many families bereaved, and a nation used to calm and peace \u2013\nin a state of shock. But a nation is not marked by adversity. It is marked by\nhow it deals with adversity \u2013 and in this, New Zealand has set a benchmark that\nis extremely high. And, that standard was in part set by the person who leads\nthe country \u2013 Jacinda Ardern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her first comment on the shooting,\nthat claimed the lives of Muslims who were immigrants from places as far apart\nas Somalia, Bangladesh, Turkey and , Afghanistan \u2013 many fleeing war and\nrepression was \u201cThey are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence\nagainst us is not. They have no place in New Zealand. There is no place in New\nZealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence, which it is clear\nthis act was.\u201d She went on to label the perpetrator a \u201cterrorist\u201d. She made no\nallowance for the claim that he represented the white view, or was working for\nthe \u2018good of white people\u2019. She saw him for what he was \u2013 a dangerous\nterrorist. And, a few days later, speaking before the New Zealand parliament,\nshe vowed not to speak the terrorist\u2019s name, and deny him the publicity and\nfame he desired. \u201c&#8221;That&#8217;s why you will never hear me mention his\nname,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He is a terrorist, he is a criminal, he is an\nextremist. But he will, when I speak, be nameless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, it is not just about her\nprompt and continuous communication to the people of New Zealand and beyond, on\nthe terrorist attack, and its aftermath, where she committed to a resolve not\nto let the terror attack divide people. &nbsp;It was also about the immense compassion and\nhumanity shown in dealing with the shattered citizens of the Muslim community,\nand New Zealand at large. She reached out, met, hugged, consoled, and shared\nthe steeliness of resolve which said that they would not, as a culture, let a\nterrorist divide them, change them, and make them the worst versions of\nthemselves. The government systems followed. And, the people of New Zealand\nresponded as one. There are videos of people forming human shields when Muslims\npray, there are videos of tattooed bikers from the country guarding\nworshippers, there is outpouring of love and oneness. There And, that is inspired\nby genuine leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also tells you why there is a\nneed for more women in politics. Maybe it is biology, maybe it is\nsocialisation, maybe it is both \u2013 but a woman are natural builders of society,\nthrough compassion and healing. Even, the iron lady of India, Indira Gandhi\ncould show compassion and tears, and not be considered weak. At a very basic\nlevel, &#8211; and this is part of the patriarchy that permeates all our societies,\nand impacts us all, especially men- people expect their male leaders to be\nformidable in the face of adversity, not show any of the qualities that are\nconsidered \u2018womanly\u2019 \u2013 compassion and healing being core amongst them. But\ncompassion and tears are not weak, they are the adhesive that binds societies and\npeople. And, while we spend the next few generations socialising young men to\ninculcate these values as values of strength, maybe it is time parties fielded\nmore women in politics. That is not to say, women will not fight against\nviolence or terror. We will. But, when it is over, we will also know how to\nprovide the healing touch.
