LK Advani fades into the sunset<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

At 91, LK Advani finally fades into\nthe sunset. There is no grand send off for the patriarch of the Bhartiya Janata\nParty, no celebration of the fact that he \u2013 through his much debated methods \u2013\ntransformed a marginal player, on the side-lines of India, to the centre stage\nof Indian politics. Advani, the six-time winner for Gandhinagar, is not the parliamentary\ncandidate that the BJP is fielding this time. His place has been taken by the\nnew strongman of the BJP, Amit Shah. At 91 there will be no comebacks for\nAdvani, as he moves from the ignored margdarshak mandal, out into the cold with\nvanprasthashram. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 There are many who believe that he should have\ngracefully gone into the sunset after the NDA lost the 2009 elections. But, Mr\nAdvani\u2019s ambition to become the Prime Minister kept him in politics, and at the\nhelm of the BJP. Despite the 26\/11 attack a few months before the elections, Mr\nAdvani was unable to enthuse voters to buy his vision of India, and the UPA\nreturned to power. He made way, rather ungraciously, and extremely reluctantly,\nfor his onetime prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Narendra Modi, \nand from then on, his career has pretty much been on ice. That most\nwithin the party and outside wished him a graceful retirement, was something he\nwas fairly oblivious to.  While the election\nof  Mahathir bin Mohamad, as Prime\nMinister of Malaysia, at 92, may have ignited some hope, the BJP had moved far\nbeyond his reach. With diminishing influence in his party, and younger leaders\ndemanding more seats, it is but natural that the BJP would look to the future,\nrather than the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

LK Advani stamped his authority on\nthe BJP in the late 80\u2019s. While Vajpayee was the acceptable face of the BJP, it\nwas Advani\u2019s personality that drove political Hindutva. As the president of the\nBJP, he saw the opportunity to carve out a Hindu vote bank, made up those who\nbelieved their political identity to be Hindu. And, a the core of the strategy\nwas not politics or political demands, but an emotive demand \u2013 the building of\na Ram temple, in Ayodha, at the spot where Lord Ram was supposed to have taken\nbirth. On that spot, stood a mosque built by Emperor Babar. Hence, Babari\nMasjid. The belief was that an earlier Ram temple was destroyed to build the\nmosque. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement was the inflection point for the BJP. It\nwent from a small group of active politicians who catered to the upper caste\nand class, to becoming a party with a committed base across social and socio-economic\nsegments. For Advani the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was the lightning rod with\nwhich he galvanised his base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But while he charged up his party,\nhe also moved the demand for a Ram Janmabhoomi from the margins to the\nmainstream.  In 1990, as President of the\nBJP, Advani undertook a rath yatra across  most of north India, with the one demand of\n\u201cmandir wahi banayenge\u201d. And as the yatra gained momentum the Ayodhya issue\nmoved from a disparate disorganised call, to an organised movement. And, as this\nmovement made its way through India, it left behind death, destruction, and\ndivided communities. And, that really is the legacy of LK Advani. This is what\nhe will be remembered for. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement that culminated in the\ndestruction of a mosque by a mob charged by LK Advani. And, of course, the\nriots hat followed.   That is what Mr Advani\u2019s political life will\nbe remembered for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advani consciously tried to change\nhis image from the hard man of the party, into a more acceptable figure, who\nwould be as fondly regarded as Atal Behari Vajpayee was. He caused a furore\namongst the extended sangh parivar when he said that the demolition of the Babri Masjid<\/strong><\/a> was\nthe saddest day of his life.  He followed\nit up by  visiting Pakistan and declaring\nJinnah as a great secularist and an ambassador of Hindu Muslim Unity. The backlash\nthat followed ended with him stepping down as Party President. And, that is\nwhen he should have gracefully moved into the sun set.  Making way for the next generation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He waited too long. And, he has\nbeen left out for ever. The Party he did so much for, doesn\u2019t need him anymore.\nIt is truly the end of an era. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
