This is the time, once in five years, that political parties demonstrate their vision for the country, and ask us for votes on the basis this vision. The Indian National Congress launched its manifesto a few days ago, and it\u2019s cornerstone was the introduction of the Minimum Income Guarantee Programme \u2013 NYAY. However, the BJP manifesto is conspicuous in the absence of the one big idea. But, it does have a smattering of smaller ideas scattered through the manifesto. So what does the BJP manifesto hold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manifesto is bookended by two\ncore ideas at the beginning and the end of the document- the first is security,\nthe last is culture, and everything else is between these two guiding\nprinciples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">. At the top is the concept of\n\u201cNation First\u201d and the focus on security, and law and order. There are policy\nstatements on the approach to terrorism \u2013 zero tolerance. The manifesto refers\nto the post Uri, and Balakot actions and says that their zero tolerance approach\nis \u201cexempli\udbc0\udcaaed\nby the&nbsp; Surgical Strikes and the Air\nStrikes carried out recently.\u201d There are promises of modernising the police\nforce, strengthening the BSF and the armed forces. There is also a clear\nstatement against Naxal terror, where the party promises to combat Left Wing\nExtremism. However, there is no mention of the rise right wing violence, nor is\nthere a mention of the myriad lynchings and a promise to curb this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other end of the manifesto is\nthe promise of cultural revivalism. Top of this list, as it has been for many\nBJP manifestos, is the promise to build the Ram Mandir \u201cwithin the framework of\nthe Constitution\u201d. But more interesting than the Ram Mandir, are the other\npromises. The party has made \u201cConserving Bharatiya faith and culture\u201d&nbsp; a core part of its promises. With this is\nalso linked its promise to revive and promote Sanskrit across schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also 75 milestones to be\nachieved by the 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of independence. A set of goals and\ntargets for the Government to try and meet. Many of these are economic goals \u2013\nthe doubling of farmers income by 2020, ensuring a pucca home for every family,\nimproving the ease of doing business and the like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core of the BJP manifesto, on\nthe economy, is tucked away in the centre of the document. And, this is the\nvision to make India into the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> largest economy in the world -\u201cUS\n$ 5 trillion economy by 2025 and US $ 10 trillion economy by 2032\u201d.&nbsp; This includes a Rs. 100 lakh crore investment\nin India\u2019s sagging infrastructure to bring it up to the standards of the modern\nage. However, this is little mention of the 100 smart cities that featured so\nprominently in the last manifesto, and a source of so much buzz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BJP manifesto is moderate on\ndetail, and low on vision. It is the manifesto of a party that is sure that it\nwill come back to power, and the promises are a continuation of what is already\nthere. It completely ignores some of the older planks on which the party came\nto power \u2013 Smart Cities, for example, finds no mention. Given that it was such\na vital part of the BJP\u2019s poll promises in 2014, and given the fanfare with\nwhich it was announced, and it has been given a quiet and unceremonious burial.\nAlso missing is any mention of the other plank of this government\u2019s actions in\nthe last 5 years \u2013 demonetisation. The manifesto suffers from amnesia when it\ncomes to this topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have to sum up the BJP\nmanifesto for a social media audience it would be Ram Mandir, Infrastructure,\nand Nation First. And the rest is singularly unimaginative. It seems like a\nmanifesto put together from old power point slides, with no one taking care of\nproofing or integrating the content. However, as it has been pointed out many\ntimes, only journalists and columnists read party manifestos. But, it does tend\nto give a sense of the direction in which a party is moving.
