In a way, it seems that the\npoliticians know one truth \u2013 the worse your behaviour, the higher the coverage.\nAnd, politicians with their innate sense of &nbsp;upping the coverage they get in the media,\nplay to the gallery.&nbsp; The question is\nwhether their gutter mouth utterances will win them censure from the\nelectorate, or votes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the issues have been the\nrampant otherization of minorities, and the terrible misogyny out on display.\nManeka Gandhi, the incumbent Union Minister for women and child development,\nhas been caught on tape coercing Muslim voters to vote for her, or find her\ndoing no work for them in the next Parliament. In a speech in her constituency\nPilbit, she has suggested that there will be a gradation of villages by the\npercentage of votes for the BJP. The higher the votes, the better the better\nthe benefits accruing to them. She has been suspended from campaigning for 2\ndays \u2013 for violating the EC\u2019s model code of conduct. But that suspension\ncoincides with the end of phase 2 campaigning, where politicians anyway hold\ntheir silence till the voting ends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maneka Gandhi is not the most\noffensive of those suspended by the EC \u2013 that dishonour belongs to Azam Khan of\nthe notoriously misogynist Samajwadi Party. He has gotten suspended for 72\nhours for commenting on BJP candidate Jaya Pradha\u2019s innerwear being khaki. The\nmale politician\u2019s obsession with what lies beneath continued with the BJP\nKerala leader PS Sreedharan Pillai targeting Muslims in his election speeches.\nHis assertion that you can tell a Muslim by \u2018removing their clothes\u2019 is not\njust offensive, but also ignores the fact that 50% of Muslims are women \u2013 who\nmay not be circumcised. For him, women don\u2019t exist. He is still campaigning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also suspended for two days is UP\nCM Adityanath who said \u2018they\u2019 have Ali, \u2018we\u2019 have Bajrangbali. The EC was not\namused with the word play. BSP supremo Mayawati too faced the EC\u2019s ire for her\nappeal to Muslims to not vote for the BJP, and vote for her alliance.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who are noticed are the big\nfish. Politicians who get national media coverage, and whose utterances can be\nused to shock us, still. There are many more who fly under the radar, covered\nonly by regional channels, with little digital footprint, that escape\nunscathed, ready to spread more venom the next day. I have heard Tamil speeches\nthat are offensive to the core, speeches from the Hindi heartland \u2013 especially\nagainst Mayawati \u2013 that cross all lines of civilised behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three main reasons why\npoliticians behave badly. The first is that they can get away with it \u2013 because\neveryone else behaves in a similar manner. The second is that one of the\nguiding principles of the media is that \u2018man bites dog\u2019&nbsp; makes more news than \u2018dog bites man\u2019.\nTherefore featuring a politician frothing at the mouth, being offensive,\nattracts more attention than a politician talking about how his or her policies\nwill improve all our lives. The third is that in many political parties, bad\nbehaviour is a sure sign of promotion. Adityanath hasn\u2019t begun speaking this\nway in this election. He was always like this. And it has paid dividends for\nhis career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless political parties decide\nthat they are going to show zero tolerance on hate, misogyny and personal\nattacks, there is little chance of us getting better candidates, or a better\nelection campaign. Given, the intense competition to garner eyeballs, it\ndoesn\u2019t look like this censure is going to happen anytime soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As media and social media gain more\nhold on our lives, the tendency for politicians who want to go viral with bad\nbehaviour will increase. It isn\u2019t that there aren\u2019t politicians who don\u2019t\nadhere to the norms of acceptable behaviour. Nirmala Sitharaman (BJP), for\nexample, took a break from campaigning, to visit Shashi Tharoor (INC) in\nhospital, where he was recovering post an accident on the campaign trail. This\nextremely lovely gesture, though captured by the media, has little chance of going\nviral. Had Ms Sitharaman made offensive remarks, that would have been carried\nby the media, and shared by social media users, ad nauseum. Genuine niceness\ngets ignored. And this also tells you why people want to behave badly \u2013 they\nget noticed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the rise in complexity of\nelections, it is impossible to cover the whole country through direct\ncampaigning.
