I write on the Rahul Gandhi campaign in the 2019 General Elections, for CNBC TV18<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world\u2019s largest elections is\nentering its final phase. In just over 2 weeks, we should know one way or the\nother, who will form the next government. No matter what the outcome is, this\nwould be seen as the elections where Rahul Gandhi finally came of age as a\npolitical leader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the 2014 elections,\nwhen the Modi Tsunami shook the political landscape, and transformed it, the\nIndian National Congress (INC) was reduced to 44 seats. Rahul Gandhi was pretty\nmuch written off as a political leader. The jokes and memes that followed Rahul\nGandhi around, grew in intensity, and the term \u201cPappu\u201d became synonymous with\nhim. The Congress party was in disarray, many defecting from the ranks of the\nGrand Old Party to the new improved BJP that was welcoming of new leadership.\nThe Congress leadership seemed old, jaded, and out of touch with the new India\nthat was emerging. The Gandhi name that was, until 2014, a fairly strong brand\nin elections, seemed to be on the wane. Rahul Gandhi\u2019s \u2018reluctant leader\u2019 mode\ndid not find too much favour even with those who voted for his party. Also,\nthere was something terribly chaffing about the very idea of only a member of a\ndynasty being able to be lead the Congress.  May 2014 was a different place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 5 years between then and\nnow, a lot has changed. There is something about the 2014 election result that\nsnapped Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress Party out of their noblesse oblige<\/em> mode, and got them to rebuild the party ground up.\nA devastated cadre had to be reassembled to take the party forward. While it\nwas easy to find people, who would represent them in the studios across India, elections\naren\u2019t won in the studios, they are won by feet on the ground. Without\ndedicated cadres\u2019 parties can\u2019t win. Rebuilding the cadres became the goal for\nGandhi, and his party. For the first time since he entered politics over a\ndecade earlier, he began talking like a leader who was there because he was\nhungry for the top spot; and not as one who was forced to take on the mantle.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi\nhas come into his own. A leader in his own right.  His embrace of a softer, kinder Hinduism\nhelps counter the BJP\u2019s anti-Hindu charge against the Congress. It also brought\nback supporters who drifted away from the party, because they saw it as \u2018anti\nHindu\u2019. The embrace of technology allowed the party to adopt the tactics that\nworked so well for the BJP. And, then they began winning seats in elections,\nand then states in elections.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last 24 months or so, Rahul\nGandhi has been setting the agenda to which the Government has been reacting.\nBe it his \u201csuit boot ki sarkar\u2019 jibe, or his \u201cGabbar Singh Tax\u201d his barbs have\nhit home, and have had the entire cabinet coming out to refute him, and defending\nthe Government\u2019s record. His continuous barbs of \u201cChowkidaar Chor Hai\u201d have\nbothered the BJP so much that not only reacted with an ill thought through\n\u201cMein bhi chowkidar\u201d campaign, but compounded it   by adding a suffix of Chowkidaar to various\nBJP twitter handles. When that didn\u2019t work, the Prime Minister lashed out Rahul\nGandhi\u2019s father- Rajiv Gandhi\u2019s record, saying \u201c\u201cYour father was termed \u2018Mr\nClean\u2019 by his courtiers, but his life ended as \u2018bhrashtachari No. 1\u2019. For those\nwho don\u2019t know, Rajiv Gandhi\u2019s life ended when a suicide bomber blew him up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is not just the political\njoust that Rahul Gandhi has learned, his manifesto seems to stamp his vision on\nthe party. At the core is his belief in a variation of a minimum income\nguarantee programme \u2013 NYAY. The socialism of the Congress, seems to be making\nway for the Social Welfarism of Rahul Gandhi. A focus on decentralisation, and\ndevolving more power is in stark contrast to the traditional Congress mode of\ncentralisation and concentrating all power in a few hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahul Gandhi\u2019s big challenge is\nthat he faces one of the most popular Prime Minister\u2019s in decades. Narendra\nModi\u2019s personal goodwill amongst the voter is high. Even if there are murmurs\nagainst his policies, or his party, there is no denying that voters look up to\nMr Modi.  However, Rahul Gandhi\u2019s constant\nemphasis on jobs, and the chowkidar jibe have been heard by the great Indian\npublic. Whether it makes any difference to the way they vote, is a different\nstory. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
