Tackle IT cells of political parties first"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This appeared on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/economy\/want-to-curb-fake-news-tackle-it-cells-of-political-parties-first-4217221.htm\">August 22nd 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a case before the Supreme\nCourt that looks at the issue of Fake news, and the proposed solution.\nRepresenting the Government, Attorney General KK Venugopal is arguing the need\nto link social media accounts with Aadhar to prevent the spread of fake news.\nWhich tells you two things \u2013 the first is that senior law officers of the\nGovernment (and opposition) need training in how the internet works. The second\nis that fake news is a serious enough problem for the government to try and\ntake some action- even though the action is not very well thought out.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fake news is a huge problem, not\njust in India but elsewhere. It has been considered responsible for bringing\nDonald Trump to power, ensuring Brexit, infuriating mobs in India to lynch, and\nstart the outbreak of the measles virus by circulating fake news about the\nefficacy of vaccinations. In short, fake news is not just a moral hazard \u2013\npeople lying \u2013 but can lead to devastating consequences for life, limb,\nproperty, and democracy. Furthermore, it is not just fake news that governments\nare worried about. There is the Dark Web too. The dark web is that part of the\nweb that is not indexed by any search engine, and can only be accessed through\nspecial browsers \u2013 such as Tor and Onion- and offers its users complete and\nutter anonymity. While many activists in nations with repressive regimes are\nknown to use the dark web to escape detection, it is also used by drug runners,\npaedophiles, human traffickers, arms dealers, and other unsavoury criminals. It\nis also this, that the system wants to check. Unfortunately for the powers that\nbe, linking aadhar with email with social networks is not going to solve the\ndark web problem. That requires a different degree of international\ncollaboration that brings down the black markets, without taking away the safe\nhaven of activists. Incidentally, like the internet, the dark web was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/04\/13\/the-dark-web-and-how-to-access-it.html\"><strong>created\nby funding<\/strong><\/a> provided by the US Navy. Its aim was to allow intelligence\noperatives to exchange information without being traced.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With fake news spreading faster\nthan the ability of corporations, or fact checkers, to verify and put out the\ntruth \u2013 there are measures needed to curb it. There were cases pending before\nIndian High courts in various states, that have all been transferred to the\nSupreme Court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one level there is the measure\nof privacy. Do you really want the Government snooping through your dog and cat\nvideos, baby pictures, and Instagram food posts? The counter to that is that\nthe information is already available online, and anyone with the ability to\nsearch can access it. After all, those of us who use social media are\nbroadcasting to our connection, and in that sense \u2013 the information is public.\nAlso, corporations churning our data are able to make linkages about us and our\nhabits with great ease. So much so, they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kashmirhill\/2012\/02\/16\/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did\/#113e5db16668\"><strong>able\nto know<\/strong><\/a> If a woman is pregnant, based on her shopping trends. &nbsp;However, across the world, including India,\nthere is legislation being planned to curb what corporations know about us, and\nuse for their ends. Should the government have access to the same data? How\nwill it impact you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second question is of\npracticality. There is nothing that stops a person living in Macedonia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/reading\/meet-the-macedonian-teens-who-mastered-fake-news-and-corrupted-the-u-s-election\/\"><strong>from\nputting out fake news<\/strong><\/a>about your country \u2013 either out of\npolitical belief, or to earn a few quick click bait dollars. Aadhar linkages\nare not going to stop them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the core, if the Government\nwants to stop fake news, it needs to clamp down on its own <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5512032\/whatsapp-india-election-2019\/\"><strong>party\u2019s IT\ncell<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>along with the IT cells of other parties. Maybe parties\nthat register IT cells and disseminate news on Whatsapp and other media, need\nto be registered as news providers, and go through the same degree of checks\nthat normal news outfits are supposed to adhere to. And, more importantly,\nbreach of verified news guidelines needs to be met with strict financial\npenalties, and maybe even jail sentences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/278407\/number-of-social-network-users-in-india\/\"><strong>350\nmillion Indians<\/strong><\/a> on social media, most of whom do nothing more than\nshare terrible Tik Tok videos. The Government wants to control 350 million\npeople, without being able to control politically motivated IT cells.
