According\nto the <a href=\"http:\/\/weedindex.io\"><strong>Weed Index<\/strong><\/a> ,New Delhi consumes\n38.26 metric tonnes of cannabis, making it the third largest consumer of the\nweed in the world (after New York and Karachi); and Mumbai ranks 6<sup>th<\/sup>\nin the world in consuming 32.38 metric tonnes of the stuff on an annual basis. An\naverage joint, according to research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/55464-marijuana-average-joint.html\"><strong>is\nabout 0.32 grams<\/strong><\/a>, so a gram will give you 3 joints. That makes it a\nwhopping 114 million joints a year in Delhi, and 97 million joints a year in Mumbai,\nthat is happily consumed, if not legally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannabis has been part of Indian\nconsumption for as far back as when history begins. The Atharva Veda talks of\nbhang as bringing joy. Shiva, in his mendicant form, is depicted as consuming\nbhang. Sadhus and Pirs partake in the communal chillum to try ad find the\nsupreme being. Bhang is consumed as part of religious and cultural festivals \u2013\non Maha Shiv Ratri, during holi; Opium drinks are traditional in parts of\nRajasthan, and opium poppy is used in sweets. And as the consumption in Delhi\nand Mumbai show, it is not just about cultural mores, people in India seem to\nenjoy their smoke ups \u2013 and a fair few of them seem to be indulging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannabis and its derivatives have\nbeen illegal in India only since 1985, with the passing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/indiacode.nic.in\/bitstream\/123456789\/10483\/1\/the_narcotic_drugs_and_psychotropic_substances%2C_act%2C_1985.pdf\"><strong>Narcotic\nDrugs and Psychotropic Substances Act<\/strong><\/a>. In part a commitment to the\ninternational treaty, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/pdf\/convention_1961_en.pdf\"><strong>Single Convention in\nNarcotic Drugs<\/strong><\/a>, and in part pressure from the United States for a\nglobal agreement on its \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugpolicy.org\/issues\/brief-history-drug-war\"><strong>war on drugs\u2019<\/strong><\/a>\npolicy \u2013 saw India follow suit in banning something its people had been\nconsuming for ages And, at the stroke of a pen, a large number of people became\nlaw breakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, that is in part one of the\nreasons why many countries and provinces across the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_in\/article\/gy4pa7\/these-are-the-countries-most-likely-to-legalize-weed-next\"><strong>are\nlegalising<\/strong><\/a> Marijuana. The fact that there aren\u2019t enough jails to lock\nup everyone who smokes up, and that it seems relatively harmless compared to\nsome of the other things people get upto. The second reason is associated with\nthe first. If marijuana is relatively harmless, then does it make sense to\nbuild up pockets of criminals who will traffic in the substance, putting up militias,\nand bribing cops to make sure that their wares are protected and reach the\ncustomer. If people are going to consume despite knowing health risks, then\nshould the government not regulate the transaction in terms of quality, price,\nand consumer rights. And, should it not charge tax for providing this service?\nAfter all, our overstretched police departments have a lot more crime to catch,\nthan some middle-aged commuter who decides to work off the day\u2019s pent up road\nrage with a marijuana joint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total worldwide cannabis market\n\u2013 that includes both the illegal and the legal parts of it \u2013 is estimated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2019\/04\/18\/1806583\/0\/en\/New-Study-Estimates-the-Global-Cannabis-Market-at-Over-340-Billion-USD.html\"><strong>US$\n344 billion<\/strong><\/a>. It is estimated that the legal market is worth $66\nbillion. Over 250 million people around the world consume it, and go back for\nmore every single day. And, these 250 million people are spending their hard\nearned, tax paid earnings on marijuana. The money goes straight to those who\nrun and manage the production pipeline \u2013 from the farm to the smoke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legalising marijuana, and\nregulating it has a four -pronged advantage. The first is that it may help\nfarmers in certain regions to grow a much in demand cash crop. The second is\nmuch needed revenue from the tax on marijuana. The third is the ability to curb\nthe illegal trade in cannabis and clipping the wings of the mafias who\nundertake this work. And lastly, the biggest advantage of all \u2013 it has long\nbeen believed that terrorist groups make their money from the drug trade.\nLegalise it, and you will cut off a source of funding for terror.
