{"id":7573,"date":"2020-01-02T17:19:22","date_gmt":"2020-01-02T17:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calamur.org\/gargi\/?p=7573"},"modified":"2020-01-02T17:19:32","modified_gmt":"2020-01-02T17:19:32","slug":"cnbc-tv18-column-what-would-gandhi-have-done","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calamur.org\/gargi\/2020\/01\/02\/cnbc-tv18-column-what-would-gandhi-have-done\/","title":{"rendered":"CNBC TV18 Column: What would Gandhi have done?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was published on the <strong>3rd of October.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, on October 2<sup>nd<\/sup>,\nGandhi gets&nbsp; moved out of the mothballs\nwe stored him in for the rest of the year, dusted, and venerated. And, then\nwhen the day is over, he gets put back in the crate and forgotten for the next\n364 days. This year, the venerations have been a bit louder and the remembrance\na bit more forced. This is the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the birth of\nMohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and everyone is trying to appropriate him as their\nmascot \u2013 the ultimate semi divine approval from the martyred&nbsp; father of the nation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cIf Gandhi had been around, what would he have\ndone?\u201d is the oft seen statement on a number of timelines, op-ed pieces, and\ngeneral statements. And, the answer to that is rather more complex than it\nseems. Had he remained alive, and in some modicum of health and fitness at age\n150, Gandhi would have been a deeply unhappy, completely marginalised person in\nIndian politics. He would have derailed policy, interfered in foreign\nrelations, marred negotiations and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;In the shot span of the 5 months between\nindependence and his murder by Godse, in 1948, he had already thrown a spanner\nin Government of India\u2019s handling of Pakistan over the invasion of Kashmir by\nbeginning a fast unto death. Post-Independence, there was a division of not\njust land, but assets. Amongst the assets was the transfer of Rs 75 crores from\nIndia to Pakistan. The first instalment of Rs.20 crores had been paid, and\nthere was a balance that had to be paid, when Pakistan government backed\nPashtun tribes invaded the independent kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, setting off\na chain of events that reverberate in the sub-continent even now. The\nGovernment of India led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister\nVallabhai Patel decided to withhold the payment of the remaining money. Rs 55\ncrores in 1948 was a lot of money \u2013 and Pakistan needed this money, and the\ngovernment of India saw a strategic advantage in using this to her advantage.\nBut Gandhi would have none of that. He believed that India should not ethically\nand morally link the two issues and went on fast to bend the Government to his\nway of seeing things. And he succeeded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Had he been alive, for decades that\nfollowed there would have been no greater thorn in the side of the Indian\ngovernment than Gandhi. He would have gone up against the powerful Indian National\nCongress in the post-independence India. Stood against the construction of\ndams, stood against the modernisation planned by Nehru. It is likely he would\nhave fasted against Operation Polo \u2013 where India annexed the princely state of\nHyderabad, and later the annexation of Goa. He would have definitely intervened\nin the post war negotiations with Pakistan in 1965, and 1971. It is likely he\nwould have opposed Emergency, and he would have stood against the state on\noperation Bluestar. He would have protested the anti-Sikh riots in 1984\nactively, and the Babri Masjid demolition; he would have stood with those whose\nhomes would have been submerged by the Sardar Sarovar Dam, and he would work\nclosely with citizens in Naxal dominated areas \u2013 including Naxal leaders. He\nwould have protested the Gujarat riots, and he would have opposed excessive\nindustrialisation. In other words, he would have protested so much in the 70+\nyears following his death, that his protests may have landed him in jail just\nas frequently as he visited it when the British were here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, you can sure, had Gandhi\nbeen alive, he would be fasting until the Government changed its stance on\nArticle 370. And you could be sure of the backlash \u2013 press coverage on Gandhi\u2019s\neccentricities; media moguls going apoplectic at whether protests of conscience\nare treason. The term traitor and the phrase \u201cGo to Pakistan\u201d would be applied\nliberally to him. There would be a meltdown on social media \u2013 and comedians\nwould have a field day with some of his utterances on the \u2018morning\nconstitution\u2019, and celibacy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Had Gandhi been alive today, he\nwould have pretty much done what he did then \u2013 protest against injustice\nnon-violently and go on fast against things that really bothered him. In an era\nfar more cynical, where consent is manufactured by mass media organisations\nshowing you a distorted version of reality \u2013 Gandhi\u2019s multi-layered\npersonality, his sense of humour, his empathy, his genuine belief in ahimsa and\nlove for all beings (including those of other religions) \u2013 may have broken\nthrough the clutter to attract a new generation. He may have been a beacon for\nmany today, as he was then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, if we take away the\nmanufactured packaging of Gandhi as a brand, and revert his messaging to his\ncore values, those values would still resonate. In a world where devotees of\nthe murderer Godse are welcomed as heroes, there will always be the need for a\nmulti layered person like Gandhi, who helps you aspire to become the best\nversion of yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What would Gandhi have said? \u2013 be\nthe change you want to see in society. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was published on the 3rd of October.
