{"id":7583,"date":"2020-01-05T05:09:37","date_gmt":"2020-01-05T05:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calamur.org\/gargi\/?p=7583"},"modified":"2020-01-05T05:15:54","modified_gmt":"2020-01-05T05:15:54","slug":"cnbc-tv18-column-kamlesh-tiwari-murder-one-more-blow-to-free-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calamur.org\/gargi\/2020\/01\/05\/cnbc-tv18-column-kamlesh-tiwari-murder-one-more-blow-to-free-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"CNBC TV18 Column: Kamlesh Tiwari Murder &#8211; One More Blow to Free Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This piece on Kamlesh Tiwari&#8217;s murder appeared on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/politics\/the-kamlesh-tiwari-murder-right-or-left-free-speech-needs-to-be-defended-4587981.htm\">23rd of October<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days ago, Kamlesh Tiwari, formerly of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha and later the President of the Hindu Samaj party, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/kamlesh-tiwari-was-stabbed-15-times-shot-one-bullet-post-mortem-report-1612067-2019-10-23\"><strong>was stabbed 15 times<\/strong><\/a>, and for good measure shot with a bullet in the face. He died of his injuries. Being considered anti-Muslim by a handful of radicalised men was enough to get him murdered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His murder, say the cops, was by\nyoung Muslim men who wanted to avenge his statements on the Prophet Mohammed. Kamlesh\nTiwari\u2019s statement on the Prophet Mohammed had led to protests by sections of\nMuslims, especially in Uttar Pradesh. Two clerics,&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-in\/news\/newsindia\/kamlesh-tiwari-murder-cleric-who-placed-bounty-on-hindu-samaj-leader-detained-from-bijnaur\/ar-AAJ1lUK\"><strong>Anwar-ul-Haq<\/strong><\/a>\nand Mohammed Mufti Naeem Kazmi put a bounty of 1.5 crores on his head.&nbsp; At that time, the Samajwadi Party led by\nAkhilesh Yadav was in charge of the state. The politics of the state were different.\nAkhilesh Yadav had Kamlesh Tiwari arrested under the National Security Act and\nlocked up. He was released on bail a year later and granted police protection\nbecause the state was afraid that someone will try and claim the bounty. The\npolice were literally caught napping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kamlesh Tiwari may have been\noffensive. But, does being offensive warrant someone going to jail, or have\ntheir neck slit and their face blown in? Does the state have no role to protect\nyour freedom of speech from radicalised zealots who will kill? And, this is not\nthe first time radicalised youth have killed those who go against their world\nview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 2015 and 2017, we saw the assassinations\nof Dr Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, MM Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh. It is\nbelieved they were killed for what they said and wrote. All four were fearless.\nAs rationalists and atheists, they were rather vehement about their rejection\nof God and God\u2019s words. As leftists they called the State and the system to\naccount. And, that didn\u2019t go down well with the radicalised. Being considered\nanti-Hindu or anti-Indian by a handful of radicalised men was enough to get\nthem murdered. &nbsp;It is believed that these\nfour murders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/india\/investigators-trace-links-between-murders-of-narendra-dabholkar-gauri-lankesh-mm-kalburgi-govind-pansare-5020831.html\"><strong>were\nlinked<\/strong><\/a> and carried out by highly motivated members of a extreme right\nwing group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things that is striking\nhere is that it doesn\u2019t matter if you are right wing or left wing, if you exert\nyour freedom of expression, it is likely to have serious repercussions in a\ntouchy world, where every word and statement is amplified and disseminated many\ntimes over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often discussions on freedom of\nexpression is framed by right- and left-wing biases. Each side wants their set\nof exceptions to the absolute freedom of expressions. \u201cYou cannot \u2018insult\u2019\nGod\/State\/Nation\/Gays\/Jews\/Africans\/Indians\/Customs\/Traditions\/Women\/Children\u201d\ngoes the chorus. But, the problem is that if you take into account everyone\u2019s\nexceptions, you probably will have nothing to talk about or indeed write about.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People have the right to their\nbeliefs, and expressing their beliefs without worrying about radicalised youth\ncoming after them with guns and knives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, this is where the state is\ncomplicit in the murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inaction by the centre and the\nstate when the clerics placed the bounty on the head of Kamlesh Tiwari, was\ncriminal Why were they not arrested, tried and put in jail for incitement to\nmurder? Why were the investigations after the Pansare murder so slow \u2013 had it\nbeen faster could the murders of the others have been prevented? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The Indian State has been lax in the\nprotection of freedoms. It is standing by and letting the radicalised set the\nagenda on what is acceptable.
