Thrown into the entertainment mix were sulking scions, ambitious\nscions, old godfathers, new political fixers, break ups, betrayals, alliances,\nand the most incredulous alignment of political forces.&nbsp; It was a mix of the Godfather, the House of\nCards, the Game of Thrones, Lion King, with a smattering of the Ekta Kapoor\nsoaps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the centre of the political\nmanoeuvrings was the Grand Old Man of Indian Politics \u2013 Sharad Pawar. Written\noff as a has been, he showed that it wasn\u2019t just the age and experience but the\nmileage of political life, and political favours that mattered. In the\npolitical ring with him,&nbsp; was Amit Shah,\nthe master puppeteer of the BJP who had a knack of installing Governments with\na simple maxim \u2013 \u201cI will make you a deal you can\u2019t refuse\u201d, to win over the\nnumbers needed to rule. This giant game of political chess was played between\nthe two, with the rest \u2013 Uddhav Thackeray and the Shiv Sena, and Sonia Gandhi and\nthe Congress bringing up the supporting cast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the core was the question of who\nwould be Chief Minister of Maharashtra\u2013 Uddhav Thackeray who felt entitled to\nbe CM, possibly because he believes that his father\u2019s legacy is enough to get\nhim there \u2013 or Devendra Fadnavis \u2013 the outgoing Chief Minister of the state.\nThere were side stories of estranged cousins, silent leaders, and sulking\nnephews \u2013 but these were the main players. Ajit Pawar tried to break the NCP by\naligning with the BJP in a midnight dash to power, but it looks like Sharad\nPawar won that battle \u2013 possibly also settling who inherits the mantle after\nhis time \u2013 his daughter or his nephew. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharad Pawar has shown that he\nmaybe old, but his political instincts and ruthlessness are as sharp as ever.\nHe is undoubtedly the man of the match. But who are the losers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is definitely the BJP. It\nhas not just lost its oldest ally, the Shiv Sena, it has also lost the state of\nMaharashtra for now. But, it has also lost more than that. It has lost a bit of\nits sheen amongst its own supporters in the rather unseemly haste in aligning\nwith AJit Pawar to form the government. If you remember, Ajit Pawar was most\nfamous for asking farmers complaining about the drought situation and the\nrelease of water from dams, whether he should urinate in the dams to provide\nwater. He apologised later but the damage was done. This, of course, was in\naddition to the many cases of corruption that are pending against him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian National Congress has\nlost its sheen on secularism and secularistic principles with its alignment\nwith the Shiv Sena.&nbsp; It has also been\nreduced to a junior partner in Maharashtra, and a triparty alliance at the next\npolls will see the seats it contests shrink further. While Baburao Thorat&nbsp; has managed to keep the Maharashtra Congress\nfrom falling apart there doesn\u2019t seem to be enough ideological difference\nbetween it and the BJP in Maharashtra to keep its people going. It has to find\na radical new strategy to build the party ground up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a bit early to understand\nwhether the Sena is a winner or a loser in these circumstances. But, it needs\nto answer what does it stand for? Is it still a party that believes in\nHindutva? Is it going to double down on its Maratha antecedents and become the\nvoice of the Marathas? Is it going to imitate its origins and look at the trade\nunion space? How does it see itself divorced from the BJP? While in politics\nthere is no point saying never, it looks unlikely that the BJP and the SS will\nkiss and make up anytime soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, there is also a lesson for\nthe Congress in all this. Power is not gifted; it has to be fought for. DK Shivkumar\nin Karnataka showed them that in a battle they lost. And, Sharad Pawar has just\npulled out all stops to win power \u2013 including aligning with the Shiv Sena. And,\nthat is the kind of political instinct the INC needs. Its older generation have\nbecome backroom operators, and its younger generation don\u2019t seem to have the\nfire in their belly to win elections. Mr Pawar is whoever he wants to be \u2013 the\nmaster of backroom politics, the ardent campaigner, and with still fire in the\nbelly to want to win.
