And, they are called\nthe cardinal and ordinal method, respectively. Both groupings have ardent\nsupporters. And, both sets of people will give you ample evidence to tell you\nwhy they are right. Each will refuse to agree with the other, and each will say\nthat they are experts and the other set are charlatans. While the issue of\nwhether the decade began this year, or will begin next year might seem trivial,\nand the extreme disagreements in this are may seem comical, it is the pattern\nwhich most disagreements follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The explosion of social platforms\nin the last decade has seen unbridled enthusiasm for people from all walks in\nlife, all corners of the globe, to connect based on interests, opinions,\npassions, and causes. And instead of being platforms that allowed for more\ninterchange, exchange, and conversations \u2013 as was the promise \u2013 it ended up\nbeing platforms that created echo chambers and filter bubbles. And, the outcome\nof this is that anyone outside the filter bubble is the \u2018other\u2019- to be\ndemonised, degraded, labelled, and termed \u2018traitor\u2019. That traitor can be\ntraitor to the cause, the ideal, the faith, the religion, the nation. The\nconcept of \u2018other\u2019 is an enemy embodied with all the qualities that you detest\nand believe is harmful to humanity as a whole; and the implicit message is that\nmaybe the world will be a better place if they \u2013 the other \u2013 were gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We see it all the time in our\npublic spaces. News anchors who label opposition to ideas as coming from the \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sudhirchaudhary\/status\/1211639768057962498\">tukde-tukde<\/a><\/strong>\ngang\u2019; people who should know better labelling them as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/politics\/hate-me-but-dont-burn-public-properties-says-pm-narendra-modi-4922171.htm\"><strong>urban\nnaxals\u2019<\/strong><\/a>, &nbsp;calling the other side\nas practising \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/trawling-twitter\/on-cab-priyanka-gandhi-says-indias-tryst-with-bigotry-owaisis-message-to-indians\/333145\/\"><strong>bigotry\nand narrow minded exclusion<\/strong><\/a>\u201d, we have gotten used to terms like Nazi\nand Fascist, Libertard and Islmaofascist being used to describe the other view.\nAnd the litany of insults continue, till the atmosphere is so vitiated that no\none wants to have a conversation with the other. And, rightly so. Would any of\nus want to interact with people who are questioning our very right to be who we\nare.; to profess in what we believe in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, this really is what the\ninternet has enabled in the last decade \u2013 the ability to otherwise people and\nideas, and try and impose the one view as the dominant one. It does not matter\nwhether we are talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/trawling-twitter\/on-cab-priyanka-gandhi-says-indias-tryst-with-bigotry-owaisis-message-to-indians\/333145\/\"><strong>Robert\nPattison<\/strong><\/a> taking over the Batman role, or <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/12\/30\/greta-thunbergs-dad-worries-about-all-the-hate-aimed-at-her\/\"><strong>Greta\nThunberg<\/strong><\/a> talking about the environment, or Indians talking about\ncitizenship, the ability of the extremes to marginalise moderates on their own\nside, and shout out the other side, is huge. The internet that has come to be\nis without filters, which allows congregation of a certain kind of extreme\nmindset that will do everything to extinguish the other point of view. The\nconveniences enabled by digital platforms is overshadowed by the polarisation\nthey have wrought on line, and their ability to spread that in the real world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital giants such as Google,\nFacebook, and their holdings have been quiet as their platforms have gotten\nmore polarised, possibly because they have realised that the more vehement, the\nmore committed abusers also spend a lot of their time online, engaging with\nothers. The algorithms that push engagement possibly recommended this as a path\nto greater audience numbers. And the toll of this approach has been paid by\nsociety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the first 10 years of this\ncentury were marked by the optimism of digital, this 10 years while building on\nthe optimism, has also exposed us to the great wild west of the internet, where\nthere are no rules, where people band together to keep each other secure, and\nwhere might is right. As more governments get into the act of regulation, and\nas the rules on hate speech and fake news become more pronounced, the\ntechnology giants are going to see their wings clipped in what they will be\nallowed to do to maximise engagement.
