Even in a city like Mumbai, that has traditionally been lukewarm\ntowards most politics at the national level, there have been protest turnouts\nthat have been significant. And, more importantly it isn\u2019t the elite South\nMumbai and South Delhi crowd waving placards and banners, but a swathe of\npeople across socio economic groups, communities, and even causes protesting\nagainst the policies of the government. In some states where they are present,\nstudent unions have helped students organise. The RSS affiliated students\u2019 union Akhil Bharatiya\nVidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has been holding pro CAA-NRC marches across various\ncities. &nbsp;A number of supporters of the\nGovernment and the CAA have tried organising. But they haven\u2019t been particularly\nsuccessful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But away from the camera lens, and away\nfrom the metros of Delhi and Mumbai that are in the public glare, the protests\nhave been met with brutal force. The stories that are coming out of Uttar\nPradesh and the excesses\u2019 of Adiyanath\u2019s police force against unarmed\nprotestors have been horrific. This is not about apprehending or arresting\npeople for breaking the law, it is about bullet that are meant to hit the mark,\nand about truncheons aimed at breaking bones. IT seems that the violence has\nthe sanction of the state. While it is likely that ultimately, the constable on\nthe beat will carry the can and lose his job \u2013 but the fact is that this level\nof police violence cannot take place without the approval of the government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, then came the attacks on\nJawaharlal Nehru National University (JNU), where police stood outside the\ngates of JNU, while a mob armed with hockey sticks, and iron rods, went on\nrampage attacking students, and teachers for hours. Government action, like the\npolice in old Hindi films \u2013 materialised after the violence was over. There\nwere videos of the police escorting those who caused the violence outside the\ngates of the university. There are allegations from both the right and the left\nthat those terrorising the students and faculty at JNU were from the other\ncamp. But, irrespective of which camp they belong to, the fact remains that the\nhome ministry was a mute observer when law and order was being trampled by\nthose who had sworn to uphold it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the protests began as a\nreaction to the Citizen Amendment Act, it has now transformed to something far\nbigger than that. In a country where the opposition is trying to figure out\nwhich dynast needs to occupy which position, and where the ruling party is busy\nramming through legislation that will have dire consequences on our Republic,\nthe people have taken on the role of the opposition. The protests are now an\numbrella for a variety of causes \u2013 chief among them being the belief that\nConstitutional rights of many communities \u2013 religious, tribal, caste, gender \u2013\nare being systematically eroded by a Government that doesn\u2019t want to listen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it is clear that the\nGovernment with superior forces, and the willingness to use them, will wait\nthis out and appear victorious \u2013 the victory will be pyrrhic.&nbsp; With more and more people who supported the\nGovernment speaking up against its intransigence, it looks like Mr Modi\u2019s\nTeflon coating will be damaged.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This appeared in CNBC on 9th January Across India, students are out protesting.
