The hubris borne out of the belief that they \u2013 and they alone &#8211; know the best. And, this knowledge is derived from the belief that they are the best positioned to save the country \u2013 spiritually, morally, and economically because their ideological moorings are the strongest. Furthermore, their unshaking belief that everyone else has nefarious interests designed to drive India to her knees, makes the BJP ruling layer incredibly thin skinned when it comes to jumping to the defence of their actions. And, of course since their actions are aimed at protecting the nation, any criticism can only be sedition, or an attack on \u2018us\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem with this kind of\nunshakable self-belief fuelled sanctimoniousness is that while it appeals to\nthe core audience, it is kind sounds discordant and acrimonious to most others.\nFor example the pronouncement of CM Adityanath <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/chanting-azadi-act-of-treason-will-take-strict-action-warns-adityanath\/\"><strong>that\nchanting Azaadi<\/strong><\/a> would be considered sedition is not just ludicrous in\nlight of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution, but also the\nbest way of propelling youngsters to shout more \u2018azaadi\u2019 chants. Or the\nconstant jibes of Amit Shah on the \u2018tukde tukde\u2019 gang, which a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/news\/trends\/rti-reveals-centre-has-no-information-on-tukde-tukde-gang-4838821.html\"><strong>RTI\nto his own department<\/strong><\/a> revealed does not exist. While all this may seem\nlike everyday political jousting, and part of the 5 year election campaigning\nthat seems to pervade our system \u2013 this kind of knee jerk, wounded, \u2018we know\nbest\u2019 response falls flat when it comes to dealing with the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, Jeff Bezos visited India\nto announce a $1 billion investment. Washington Post, owned by Bezos, has been\ncritical about the Government. In various op-ed\u2019s and articles, the Post has\nbeen critical of most aspects of governance \u2013 from law and order breakdown and\nlynching, to demonetisation and the handling of the economy. The government\u2019s\nresponse to one of the world\u2019s largest investors was an icy cold shoulder. No\none senior in the government met the head of Amazon, to entice him into even\nlarger investments and commitments to India. To compound the matter were the\ncomments by Piyush Goyal, who said that the investment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/16\/amazons-1-billion-investment-in-india-is-no-big-favor-trade-minister-says.html\"><strong>was<\/strong><\/a>\n\u201cno big favour\u201d. And, while people like Bezos invest in India because of her\ngreat market potential, and it is not a favour, the minister should have known\nbetter than seem to be unwelcoming of foreign investment. While Goyal later\nwithdrew the remark, you really cannot unsay things.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is this kid of pugilistic\narrogance that seems to suggest that the government is not willing to talk, not\njust with protestors on the streets, but also with international funders,\ninvestors, and banks. The chant of \u201call is well\u201d followed by the chorus of \u201cwe\nare on the path to become a $5 trillion economy\u201d might satisfy the devout, but\nit is not going to cut any ice with hardnosed bankers with calculators for\nhearts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the government and its\nrepresentatives should be out there in the capital cities where international\nbanks and funding institutes are present, and lobby, cajole, and impress \u2013 they\nare sitting in India taking pot-shots at people exercising their fundamental\nrights. It is this While the government should have been engaging with Gita Gopinath,\nthe Indian born head of the IMF, and presenting their plans&nbsp; there seems to be little in the way of\ninfluencing people. There is a severe crisis of perception if the Indian\ngovernment projects us growing at a trajectory to reach US$ 5 trillion, and the\nIMF significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/imf-may-significantly-downgrade-india-growth-forecast-in-jan-gita-gopinath-11576594418208.html\"><strong>downgrades<\/strong><\/a>\ngrowth projections and expresses its doubt at meeting that target anytime soon.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government needs to get its act\nplace. Mr Modi\u2019s charm and networking can only get them so far, the remaining\nministers have to pull their weight. They cannot be seen as being contemptuous\nto international investment, or start fluttering like pigeons, every time\nsomeone criticises government actions. No other government in a democratically\nelected space seems as thin skinned and bothered about what others say, as our\ngovernment. And that is not doing it any good. The time for campaigning is\nover. The elections have been won last year.
