It is from the capital city of\nthe Republic of India \u2013 New Delhi. At the time of writing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/pm-narendra-modi-tweets-appeal-to-my-sisters-and-brothers-of-delhi-to-maintain-peace-and-brotherhood-2185982?pfrom=home-topscroll\"><strong>27\npeople had lost their lives<\/strong><\/a>, and 200 were reported injured. The last\ntime the city saw violence erupt in such an organised manner was 1984. This\nweek, amidst the visit of US President Trump to India, communal clashes took\nplace. The news of the visit, the trade deals, and the diplomatic bonhomie\novershadowed by the violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the flash point of the riots\ncan be attributed to a number of players \u2013 politicians trying to rise up the\nladder, media trying to burn the country for ratings, Delhi police doing\nnothing \u2013 &nbsp;the causes of this are more\nsystemic: &nbsp;a feature of our political\nsystem that is going through a churn, and our economic system that has left\nmillions without a job or even the hope of a job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the top of the list is a government\nthat does things without knowing what it will do next. A case in point was\ndemonetisation \u2013 the sucking out of <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/crgmn_demonetization.pdf\"><strong>86%\nliquidity<\/strong><\/a> out of the economy without a plan to replenish liquidity\nrapidly. Abrogation of <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/kashmir-lockdown-schools-winter-break-article-370-6285031\/\"><strong>Article\n370<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 another \u2013 kept citizens cut off from the rest of India for almost\n200 days as part of \u2018a method of integrating them better with India.\u2019 The\ngovernment didn\u2019t seem to have a road map then, and they don\u2019t seem to have one\nnow. The less said about having a plan for moving the economy out of doldrums\nthe better; the same is the case with the current situation. with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/politics\/understanding-the-chronology-a-few-fundamental-truths-about-the-caa-nrc-npr-and-all-the-threads-that-bind-the-three-together-7825351.html\"><strong>CAA,\nNRC chronology<\/strong><\/a> established&nbsp; and\nreiterated, is it that the government didn\u2019t expect protests? Or is it that\nthey didn\u2019t expect multi-community protests? Is it that they didn\u2019t expect\nstudents to turn up in such large numbers, including students who voted for\nthem in 2019? There seems to have been no plans for outreach. No plans for\ndiscussion; there still doesn\u2019t seem to be a clear way forward. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the second level, we have an\nopposition that is in deep slumber. The key \u2018national\u2019 party, the Indian\nNational Congress, has not got its act in place 9 months after its disastrous\nperformance in the General Elections. Their leadership issue is in abeyance,\nand on most days they look rudderless. They may be reviving in the states, but\nthat is despite the leadership at the centre. The rest of the parties are at\nbest regional players, and there is nothing that is going to change that in the\nnear future. Both the Congress and regional parties collectively speak the\nlanguage of the 1990s and are out of touch with the people. During the\nprotests, they were conspicuous by their absence. The Aam Aadmi Party, which\nwas voted into power for a third term could have done something about brokering\na negotiation in Delhi,&nbsp; but didn\u2019t.\nArvind Kejriwal has been seemingly struck dumb with his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArvindKejriwal\/status\/350081098887340032\"><strong>helplessness<\/strong><\/a>.\nThe crisis in the opposition is another reason why we have got this situation.\nIf they weren\u2019t dynastic entities that suffocated talent in their own parties,\nto favour their families \u2013 would we be in a situation where a government rams\nthrough legislation without enough public discussion or consensus? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third factor is the economy. &nbsp;Economically we are not doing well, and a\nglobal downturn in the light on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/feb\/26\/will-coronavirus-trigger-global-recession-donald-trump-trade-policy\"><strong>Coronavirus<\/strong><\/a>is not going to help us get better. Prices are rising. The inflation rate\nwas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/videos\/economy\/inflation-up-growth-down-is-indian-economy-headed-for-stagflation-heres-what-it-means-according-to-experts-5294501.htm\"><strong>7.6%\nin January, with food inflation at 14%<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;\nUnemployment is an issue. If young people are in jobs, they aren\u2019t out\non the street rioting. And, India simply doesn\u2019t have enough jobs. There are\nenough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14036096.2019.1578996\"><strong>studies<\/strong><\/a>\nthat correlate a high rate of unemployment with urban riots. They transmit anger and emotional\nviolence against us, on a consistent basis \u2013 keeping us scared and angry. A\ndangerous combination. And, it is starting young. We are all used to seeing\nyoung boys in Kashmir turn into stone throwers. Now you see young boys in Delhi\ndo the same. Pictures of gangs of boys, who probably aren\u2019t even adults,\ncarrying roads, and planks \u2013 either to attack or defend &#8211; is shattering. There\nis one thing about the rage of adults, when children are radicalised as a\npeople we need to sit back and introspect on what we are turning into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this is fixable, and India\nand Indians have done it before. It is not impossible. It may not even be in\nthe realm of very difficult, if we put our collective minds to it and plan it\nout in detail. But, the four have to be addressed together. The Government must\nlisten. There must be an opposition that questions the government legislatively.\nThe economy has to be fixed, and the polarisation has to be cracked down upon.\nBut there needs to be pollical will to get this done.
