An amazing article in the The Nation about two ladies – Rashida Bee and Champa Devi Shukla – who have been fighting the last 20 years to bring justice to those affected by the Bhopal tragedy.
Last week they won the Goldman Environmental Prize. My favourite quote is one by Champa Devi Shukla who thought someone somewhere had made a mistake. She said
. “We knew a few individuals who had won awards,” she explained, “[but] they were all educated people, spoke English and had e-mail accounts.”
What these two ladies have done over the last two decades is nothing short of sensational. They have taken on the mighty US corporation, the uncaring Indian Government – all the way to where they are just a few steps away from justice.
Even if they lose – they really have won.
