says the Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee , while speaking to journalists

"I am not saying that media does not give space to our news. But they should give more news. Parliament forms laws to govern the state, they think about the future of India,"

But, within Parliament it is a different matter. An unruly bunch – especially in the opposition bunches – tries to ensure that the work of the Government (and therfore work of the people who elected the Government) does not happen. This is Mr.Chatterjee, within Parliament.

Chatterjee, who had last week admonished the law makers saying that they “are working overtime to finish democracy” in the country, complained on Monday that the House was becoming a place of “tamasha”. “What job have you given me? I want to get rid of this job now,” Chatterjee remarked amidst an uproar and regretted nobody was willing to listen to the Chair.

“It is a farce? Anyone, anytime can get up and dictate to the Chair,” he said, adding, “not a single member can cite any issue that I have not allowed, yet you do this.”

What does the media cover? "Today nothing happened in Parliament, as MP's don't know how to behave" is news for a day, maybe for a week. After that it becomes kind of stale….

Maybe, like we have in colleges in Mumbai, there needs to be a minimum 60% 75% attendance in Parliament for a MP to get a ticket again… Maybe there needs to be a method of monitoring their behavior in Parliament. If there is excessive bad behavior – shouting, throwing chappals, not heeding the Speaker, not respecting process — maybe the MP's ought to be expelled – just as students are. Or maybe, they ought to get some elder from their family to explain why they are so badly behaved. !!

  1. Hi Amit – welcome to this blog.
thanks for the links – they were illuminating.
In there is the RTI – which is a pretty much catch all act that allows citizens the right to any information that tax pays for… it is a great act but it needs citizens to be proactive . ..
maybe one day we will have organisations that will put this sort of information out without citizens having to take direct action to figure it out …
