This from Ani Sikkim Runcha
The indefinite hunger strike reached its 7th day today withTenzing Gyatso Lepcha also being admitted to STNM hospital today. While Dawa and 2 others are still in STNM hospital, two are continuing their indefinite hunger strike at BL House.
Months earlier, Dawa and Tenzing had gone on a historic 63 day indefinite hunger strike asking the government of Sikkim to review and scrap hydel projects coming up in Dzongu.
The Government of Sikkim has announced that it is willing to scrap some of the projects in Dzongu but says that the Panan Hydel Project shall not be scrapped.
The indefinite hunger strike continues yet again.
The protesters Satyagrahis are carrying out the hunger strike, because they believe the hydel projects will cause tremendous ecological demand (which it probably will).
I don't remember seeing anything about this in the MSM … do you ?
I wonder if such satyagrahas helps in solving any issues???
Jassi: The biggest of them did get rid of the British for India. It is a slow but steady race.
Hi jassi
apart from what shefaly has said — which is actually true…the satyagrahis’ here have managed to get the decision on 6 other dams reversed.
I think that if there was a bit more media coverage and citizens from other states got to know of stuff like this and put pressure on the state… maybe things will move ahead
there was a sad statement that i read from Tibetian protestors saying non-violence doesn’t get coverage .. they said that if a bomb explodes in iraq or afghanistan, then people hear about it…. if people protest peacefully … then it doesn’t become news…
