From today’s Express:

A BJP MP from Gujarat was on Wednesday detained at the Indira Gandhi international airport in New Delhi for allegedly misusing his wife’s passport by taking another woman.Babubhai Katara, who represents Dahod in the Lok Sabha, was detained by immigration officials after they found out that the woman who was travelling with him was one Paramjeet and not his wife Sarada Ben.

It is almost as funny as the BJP minister in charge of "religious affairs & cow protection" from Gujarat who was arrested with copious amounts of liquor . (addendum) – it is no longer funny, what i thought was an attempt by a dirty old man to take his youngish girlfriend out of the country has turned into something far worse. it seems like our esteemed MP was involved in human trafficking kudos to the BJP for having the courage to suspend him. And that too so very promptly. After their inexcusable response to the Rahul Mahajan fiasco, and the Sidhu homicide — this helps put them back on the road to redemption – at least vis-a-vis ‘integrity’ is concerned.

This from today’s DNA:

A 24-year-old undertrial in Orissa has married a teenage girl whom he allegedly raped and got pregnant a few years ago. The traditional tribal wedding between Padmini Murmu, 16, and Khaira Hansda was solemnised at the Circle Jail at Baripada, the district headquarters of Mayurbhanj, 250 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, where Khaira is lodged on charges of rape, a jail official said.

I suppose that kissing someone in public, or marrying outside one’s religion is against ‘Indian culture’ but getting married to the man who raped you is very much part of our culture. Afterall, the guy has redeemed the girls’ reputation by filling her forehead with sindoor. By the way, the girl is underage even now, which means that she was even more underage when she got raped. And the jail authorities organised this marriage ? ….. Isn’t there something about upholding the law that is a must for our civil servants? Before we pooh pooh this and say that the victim was a tribal, and possibly uneducated and these things happen there (where ever there is supposed to be) let’s not forget that our esteemed judges have offered the victim the prospect of matrimony with the, rapist a fair few times in cities no less. I wonder where are the morchas, or the protests or the spontaneous expression of our outrage – surely raping, harming, killing someone is against our culture – much more than kissing and cuddling and making independent choices.

Last week, while the PC was playing dead, I re-saw Peter Weir’s, almost prophetic, The Truman Show

Long before (well actually, a couple of years before) popular reality shows that dot the tv landscape, or the 24 by 7 Big Brother style coverage, The story, for those who haven’t’ watched it, is simple. Truman Burbank – played by Jim Carey – is the star of the 24*7 reality soap – The Truman Show . Except that he doesn’t know that his life is a soap, and all his friends and relatives are characters. As he slowly begins to realize that his life is not quite what it seems, he begins making plans to escape it.

Ed Harris who plays God - the TV producer Christos – whose brain child is the TRuman Show – is chillingly accurate when he says:

We’ve become bored with watching actors give us phony emotions. We are tired of pyrotechnics and special effects. While the world he inhabits is, in some respects, counterfeit, there’s nothing fake about Truman himself. No scripts, no cue cards. It isn’t always Shakespeare, but it’s genuine. It’s a life.

If any of us wonder, why reality is doing well, this is as good a reason as any. At the core we see everything hanging out, and that is what hooks us to come back. We want to see the ugliness and the naked emotion. I am not sure whether we want to see people win as much as we want to see them lose.

The Truman Show remains one of my two favourite films on the media, the other one being Network If you haven’t seen either film, do try and snatch a view. Both are very different in nature, and both are entertaining views.

Apart from being a comment on the nature of TV, the film is primarily about individual liberty. It asks the intrinsic question, is a well ordered, comfortable, ‘prison’ better than an uncertain future ?

There are moments when I feel like Truman. I want to drown my mobile, unplug my computer, burn my credit cards and go off into the mountains. But, is that really freedom?

Somehow having the home computer down, even if you are networked at the workplace — makes me feel cut off, marooned…..

The Video card died. It just got up one day, sputtered and breathed its last, leaving a whole bunch of binary rolling up my screen , giving an impression of data being broken by virus and disintegrating.  Scary – if it happens when you are half way through a presentation. Replacement took 4 days ….. old model parts not available easily. When the display got restored, C drive was no longer functional …. had to be rebooted. A lot of memories down the drain. Maybe it is for the best. Maybe the old is holding me back.

Yesterday, finally full services were restored. And i feel as though I am back from the wilderness.

Off to Lonavala now, for the new year and dad’s birthday. Should be back tomorrow.

Happy New Year :)
