I dont’ visit my home in Lonavala as often as I ought to. But, everytime I go there i am recharged, refreshed and rejuvenated. It is almost as though it washes away all the sadness, the compromises and the conflict – which are a part of everyday life.

Monsoons in Lonavala are striking – the colours are amazing, it seems like the whole world has had a bath and is cleansed.

what are monsoons without rust – i need to get the fence painted – but, i must admit that this is among the best looking rust that I have seen.

and, in other news – the post on Jhing Chik Jhing has begun in full earnest – the movie should be ready sometime next month.

Confession Time. I don’t like buying food – especially vegetables – in malls. Never have. I find their sanitized organization scary.

Even when I stayed in London, I would trudge down to the local market and pick up fresh veggies from the guy with a barrow than go to a Sainsbury’s and pick out the pretty looking stuff sitting on their shelves. Don’t know why – maybe it’s the smell of mint or coriander, or the bustle of activity, or bargaining or whether it is congregation of different types of people in the market – I don’t know. But, i gravitate towards a vegetable market.

Back in India, the market place is a whole different ecosystem. It is alive, it is fun, and it is so damn vibrant – that you can stay and watch and just take in the smells and sounds the whole day long. Stuff that I really can’t do in a mall -unless I am at Landmark spending a fortune on books.

Today while getting back from my lectures at Sophia’s I stopped out at Dadar to visit the wholesale market. There is a great satisfaction in picking up 2.5 kilos of baby potatoes for Rs.30, or half a kilo of beans for Rs.10, or even a giant bunch of coriander for Rs.8.

Dadar vegetable market is not a place that you take a camera into, not unless you don’t want to buy vegetables. But there are other markets that you can – especially when dad and mom are in tow selecting and buying.

Vile Parle (East) vegetable market is great fun. It is usually on a Sunday that i go there- twinned with a visit to the Parleshwar temple – one of my favourite temples in Mumbai. Parle is slightly steep in terms of pricing – but, the vegetables are yum.

Greens are Good for You, and so is Spinach...
Just outside the station – on the pavements on either side are a whole host of vegetable sellers – selling their wares. It’s usually a crowd by evening – but if you get in by 5 – it’s quite peaceful.

The Tomato Seller

The guys at Parle, don’t stand for too much haggling – it’s pretty much a take it or leave it policy – unless you go to the vegetable sellers with the baskets, as opposed to the vegetable sellers with the stalls.

The Vegetable Stall

But, by far my favorite vegetable market is in Lonavala. Close to the station and close to home. When i go there for weekends, sometimes i pick up vegetables. It comes from Nahik, and is tastier – they claim. and it does – whether it is the power of suggestion or genuine, I can’t tell – but they are very, very tasty.

greens are good for you

Again, its not a place in which you can bargain, but a bargain you will definitely get :)

VEGGIES

The next time you fancy a mixed vegetable pulao or a salad, or just tasty vegetables, do pop down to your nearest mandi - and you will get more than refrigerated freshness – you will get truly fresh !

Last weekend was at Nangargaon, Lonavala. It was an extended weekend. The garden needed fixing, the home had a whole bunch of little things to get right – and the one day breaks was not enough to get anything done.

The earlier gardener had let weeds overrun to such a level that not only could i find little garden snakes all around, but the weeds killed the plants. The tomato died, the mango sapling was murdered, the hibiscus looked as though it was out of a famine struck zone, and there were mosquitoes the size of elephants buzzing around and sucking blood with the glee of a vampire…

The earlier gardener was packed off in the course of our last visit – a month earlier. He was probably the only person who knew less about plants than me — and that is saying something. I took some of the stuff that i had grown on my little window sill, got some other plants from a nursery near by, and the garden was ready to go…

Thankfully they are growing well. I have taken another mango sapling that i had grown in a pot and had it planted. the parijata is blooming; the tulsi is growing;the banana, which was earlier showing signs of dying, seems to have revived … and i went and spent more money on more plants :)

My colleagues find my joy at a plant flowering very amusing. But, i am a city girl. Have lived in some city or the other all my life. My ancestors left the village some 4 generations ago — and i really don’t have a ‘native village’ as such. so, the sight of something growing on land – as opposed to a pot on the window – makes my heart sing….

Here’s wishing that i could grow this, but it would just attract too many mosquitoes …. maybe if i had a bigger place with a distance between the house and the pond … then,

Sarah Vaughn in the classic Summertime, from Porgy & Bess.

Summer is here… and there is no escaping from the heat in Mumbai. In fact, Mumbai, with its heavy dose of humidity this year feels terribly like Chennai. And, since I am spending the latter part of this month in Chennai – for my patti’s 85th birthday – I think of the heat here as a practice session to get my body attuned for the heat and humidity in Chennai.

Last weekend we escaped to the house in Lonavala. It wasn’t exactly cool, but it wasn’t as hot and muggy as Mumbai either. And, of course i played with my new toy.

The plants are in full bloom, and none look prettier than the wild flowers that grow everywhere….

Morning Spray
The little garden around the house is in full bloom with sprays of bougainvilleas, roses, tomatoes, capsicum, petunia, papaya etal

All in all, the flora and the fauna are basking in the sun and reveling in its glory … even if you and I are getting a bit baked !

There are tons of things to do in and around the house in Lonavala and now that the house is more or less settled, I have begun exploring around…..

Winters in the Western Ghats – means hues of brown and green. Stark, Majestic and imposing. The green usually makes way for Golden, leaving the hills looking like gold. There is a majesty about the landscape of Maharashtra – the sheer ruggedness of the mountains, and the starkness of the plateau, the solidity of the coast. IT is an attractive land… not beautiful or handsome in terms of ‘looks’ or in a conventional sense of the world. But, attractive in terms of character and personality – a character and personality that is noble, steadfast and enduring..The attractiveness of innate strength of character…..

When we got the house a year ago… the plan was for a garden. Not just a garden with flowering plants, but also fruits, veggies and spices….. mom and dad joked about growing grass – as their retirement plan…… at least I think it was a joke….

Nangargaon in Lonavala is normally beautiful….. but, come winter it just blooms with various colours…

The Neighbours

The neighbourhood – Nangargaon, Lonavala

Our garden was planted with bougainvillea …. which is abundant around the place… and Mr.Rokade (the gardner) had planted banana, lemon, papaya, mogra, kadipatta and tulsi….

I will be a flower tomorrow.

There are more… but i am afraid that this will look like a florists’ blog…. nothing wrong with that except that I don’t know the name of most of the flowers…. which is why the pics get exotic names like morning glory and orange swirl…. etc :)
