Shefaly has a meme up here, on the A to Z of films that she liked, and has very generously asked readers to ‘steal it’ – and i needed something light to blog about — i have overdosed on ‘soapbox’. in fact at times i feel like a soapbox standing on a soapbox giving a lecture :)

when i began this meme, i thought it would be easy. I have watched zillions of films. And, then the debate began. Is it movies that you enjoyed technically, is it movies that you enjoyed cinematically, are they movies that i enjoyed intellectually … for example should it be A for Apu Sansar or A for Amar Akbar Anthony?

So finally i decided, that these are the equivalent of soul movies – just as dark chocoate, or playing with the dog, or getting a massage makes the world seem better, so do these films. These are movies that make me laugh even now. Movies that wave their magic wand and transport me for 3 hours into a world that is entertainment !

Here goes:

Amar Akbar AnthonyI love this film. Despite all its illogical inconsitencies. The opening sequence where Amar, Akbar Anthony are hooked up directly via tubes to Nirupa Roy, donating blood simultaneously right into the receipient; the classic inebriated Amitabh Bachchan having a conversation with his mirror image, Nirupa Roy as mother getting her sight back after a Sai Baba bhajan; and of course Anthony Gonzaves :)

Babe - ok, I am a sucker for fairy tales. Especially where you have stories ugly looking, clumsy animals trying to fit in. And no i don’t want pop psychology :)

Chupke Chupke – Take one ghas phoos waale botony teacher, one jijjaji who likes shudh hindi, a woman who wants both the men in her life (jijaji and husband) to like each other, an English professor who stands in to teach biology and a whole bunch of other craziness, and you have Chupke Chupke. I can watch this film any time and smile :)

Dumbo - An elephant with oversized ears is initially the laughing stock of the circus, but soon proves himself. Dumbo … can still make me sob like a baby :) in the nicest sense of the way . Here is a drunk Dumbo having a blast

E.T. – I was 22 and in London. I had tuberculosis and didn’t know it (till 3 months later). It was Christmas, i was broke, heart broken and ill. I was trying to be strong and brave and live in a state of denial. And, then I saw E.T. I saw the alien wanting to ‘phone home’ and something within me broke – i cried and in crying i healed. I phoned home, my heart mended, my body was healed … so this film is kind of special.

Field of Dreams – ‘if you make it, they will come’ says the voice in Ray’s head – setting the stage for web businesses from then on :) In this case the task is just as improbable – build a baseball pitch in the middle of a corn field – to allow a bunch of players who threw matches to redeem themselves. Yes, that is the other theme that i tend to like – redemption. And, i didn’t even study in a convent !

Golmaal – the story of little white lies that become huge big whoppers through which the entire Tank Corps can pass … Hrishikesh Mukherjee in top form. The silly stick on mustache rules

Hero - Subhash Ghai’s launch of Jackie Shroff as a response to the tantrums of star kids, and a star was born. Has a man ever looked more yummy ? I was a school kid when it came out, and had my first crush. How smile evoking is this film – they have a song called ‘Ding Dong Baby Sing Song”. seriously !

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - great action, wonderful setups, two gorgeous men and some great banter. Not much that can ask for in a movie !

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron Can there be a movie nuttier than this. Do you remember the Draupadi Vastraharan scene ?

Kranti - this is in for completely the wrong reasons. every time i see Manoj Kumar with that big pendant i have this urge to laugh. Everytime, i see everyone from Prem Chopra to Dilip Kumar; Hema Malini to Sarika hamming it – i crack up. I see this movie, not as a patriotic film, but as an out and out comedy :) . Imagine a bunch of revolutionaries singing ‘channa chor garam ‘ before they blow up a fort !

Lion King - Simba rules as does Hakuna Matata

Midnight Run – a film that seriosly makes me laugh. Robert de Niro and Charles Gordin in a film about a modern day bounty hunter and a con on the run. Great dialogues, great chemistry and a nice film.

Naked Gun – I really like the naked gun series, especially when i feel fried with the world. I love that 60′s feel and earnestness. Leslie Nielsen is a blast

Om Shanti Om – or OSO – mindless, silly, but supremely entertaining. SRK as the bhola and the brat work very well. a movie that has a song called ‘dard e disco’ is not taking itself seriously, why should you ?Leave you logic at home and smile !

Pretty Woman – she is a woman of negotiable affections, he is a man with non existent morals. And they meet, fall in love and live happily ever after. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts sizzle in this reimaging of Cinderella !

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak – not really but i couldn’t find anything else with Q – not even quantum of solace ! and, yes there is a whole bunch of silliness in the film that makes me smile – still worth watching for a young Aamir Khan and a bubbly Juhi Chawla

Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman – Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla – light up this one. I always saw it as a modern Shri 420

Singing in the Rain – just singing in the rain … Gene Kelly and a track that is magic. for best effect, watch when it is raining :)

and watch Donald o’Connor & Gene Kelly in Moses Supposes

To Have & Have Not - ‘you know how to whistle don’t you. Just put your lips together & blow.’ Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall sizzle in this studio production of romance, smuggling and war !

U – none

V – Not Really … Victoria no. 203 (the older version) but not really :(

When Harry Met Sally – Remember the scene in the restaurant ?

X – definitely not X-men :)

Yalgaar - if the sight of Feroze Khan calling Mukesh Khanna pappa, or dad – cannot crack you up, then nothing can. Like Naked Gun, this should have been a parody – but ….

Z – not really.

We live in times, where it seems that there isn’t much to smile about. but, there is. People, events all manage to make us smile and understand that the bulk of the world is not just good but also good matured. so spread this meme :)

rangeela

It is almost a decade since Rangeela was released. And, it was a fabulous film. A.R.Rehman had composed a brilliant soundtrack, there were some rocking numbers, and the actors sizzled. It was possibly my favourite Ram Gopal Verma movie after Shiva. I used to have the tape in my car and listen to it quite frequently. And, then my tape system died, CD’s came in and my PC became my home entertainment system. A lot of stuff I had on tape had not yet been converted to the CD format. And, I lost touch with a lot of music i listened to at that point in time.

Last week when I was out shopping, i saw a CD of Rangeela. Nostalgia overcame me, and i purchased it. A shiny new CD with my favourite songs …. i got into the car, peeled off the wrapping and put the CD to play…. to my astonishment i no longer liked the music. And, there was a part of me that felt terribly let down by it. I think, that in the intervening decade my tastes had changed … and i really didn’t realise it… But, it got me thinking … what else did i enjoy, that i can no longer handle now…. and here are a few of my (earlier) favourite things … that are no longer favourite…

a) American Prayer - by Jim Morrison – there was a time when R was still in Mumbai, when it would almost be an anthem… A whole bunch of semi inebriated people saying waah waah to the American Prayer. About six months ago I was at a friend’s place and there was something that sounded like a terrible audio mix that was coming out of his speakers…… ‘that sounds like cats being tortured’ I said … ‘ i thought you liked Morrison’ was his response…. I do like the Doors even now, but the American Prayer, is just too spaced out for me…

b) Ayn Rand - when i was 13 she was my heroine ….. i was in love with Howard Roark and John Galt. When i was 25 I re-read the books and was terribly impressed by the philosophy … “wouldn’t it be lovely to be an island without bothering about the world’s mediocrity and compromise” . was my take. And, then i read both Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead last year. My response to Atlas shrugged and its question “who is john galt” was who cares, and i was seriously appalled by the rape fantasy in Fountain Head — women generally don’t fall in love with men who rape them!!
I found the writing turgid and the philosophy juvenile. Maybe 10 years from now I will appreciate it again.

c) Partying - I used to be out 5 nights a week. A 14 hour working day, 5 hours of hard core partying. I simply got into the groove of socialising, going out, consuming copious amounts of everything that was not good :) and having fun. I can’t anymore….. I seriously don’t enjoy partying. Hanging out with friends is one thing, hanging out with groups is something quite different.

d) Directing — like most others in my profession i was terribly fida about the film making process. i spent hours preparing, fine tuning technique, understanding light, understanding edit and so on. I was, and still am, fairly good at it…. But, it no longer interests me to the level that it did…. If i am to direct something that is not documentary in nature, i seriously have to psyche myself up …. it is often like watching paint dry :)

e) Films – i used to devour Hindi Films & Hollywood films with equal gusto . Ever since DD introduced the Sunday film sometime last century, i have been hooked to films. I watched at least three a week (if not more) all the way till 1998 or 1999. And, then one day, i stopped. I could no longer handle the Feature Film. Most of them – Bollywood or Hollywood are excruciating, especially if they also happen to be box office hits :) . However, in the last year or so, i have seen stuff that is slowly bringing me back to being an occasional visitor to the theater !

For the last 4 weeks or so we have been hard at work on our business plan. After 4 years of running our own business, it is time to get some cash infusion to do bigger and better things… Part of putting any business plan together is looking at shitloads of industry specific research as back ups for your own projections. Normally, in stuff like this you quote industry body reports on growth, returns, expectations etal… And normally one tends to use one of the two reports that are put out by the industry FICCI Frames or the Confederation of Indian Industries reports…..

However, this year the number of flaws and errors in the FICCI Frames report makes it virtually unusable. The TV portion is vague .. their content market figures estimated at 9 billion INR (900 crores) seems grossly underestimated, especially given that last year's hours of original content was pegged at 32,000 hours+ hours of programming. On an average a large General Entertainment Channel (GEC) spends about 250 to 300 + crore rupees on content. This doesn't include regional, niche and other channels including news. With news one can take the stance that the costs don't really come into content but into personnel and infrastructure, and even if you discount news the figure is a lot higher than 900 crores. More likely to be INR 1500+ crores ( we did a back of the envelope calculation, and once it is validated I will post that). But, their figure can be defended.

But, what cant' be defended and what is a truly glaring piece of erroneous research is the following :

(source : page 107 of the FICCI Frames: Indian Entertainment & Media Industry Report, 2008

My serious suggestion is click on the JPEG to see the figures it will show the following gems :

Andaman & Nicobar and Arunachal Pradesh (we won't even go into the logic of this clubbing) has 1546 Cinema  screens.

Tamil Nadu has 6 Cinema  screens

Uttar Pradesh has 3  Cinema  screens

And the rest are equally ridiculous. Maharashtra (excluding Vidarbha) , according to the report has  95 Cinema  screens. (aside – i wouldn't be surprised if the Mumbai suburbs has 95 cinema screens

I can only surmise that the reason that China wants to take over Arunachal Pradesh and the reason why Andaman and Nicobar is sinking and the reason why Uttar Pradesh has so much crime is because of the number of cinema screens. With this kind of data, we are going to end up with equally wonky causality :)

This from the Economic Times Entertainment News

Making his debut in films, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh will star in a Bengali movie, which also stars close family friend and Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan.

Singh will play the role of a politician in the film titled "Sesh Sanghat" (last conflict).

The story line revolves around a girl from a poor family, played by Bachchan, who is exploited physically and mentally by a powerful feudal lobby and joins insurgents who promise her justice, said the director of the film Ashok Visvanathan.

I wonder whether  he plays the 'Good Politician' or the 'Bad Politician'

But, if actors can become politicians, it would be natural that politicians may want to face the arc lights. They anyway end up performing to the gallery most of the time !

It was Kishore Kumar’s death anniversary over the weekend, and Radio Farishta on World Space radio had a lovely tribute to his music.

It kind of got me thinking of my favourite Kishore Kumar solo’s over the decades of Hindi Film Music. So hear they are in alphabetical order (more or less)

  1. Choti Si Yeh Duniya Pehchane Raste – Film Rangoli, Music Shankar Jai Kishen, Lyrics Shailendra. I really haven’t seen this film, but just love the song.

  1. Ek Ladki Bhigi Bhagi Si – Film Chalti Ka Naam Gadi – Music S.D.Burman, Lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri. KK singing for himself and a very wet Madhubala

  1. Geet Gata Hoon Mein – Film Lal Pathar – Music Shankar Jai Kishen, Dev Kohli. Featured on Vinod Mehra mangling a piano, with Rakhee, Raaj Kumar and a glowering Hema Malini.

  1. Jeevan Ke Safar Mein Rahi – Film : Munimji, Music : S.D.Burman, Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi. A young Dev Anand – for the life of me I cannot remember the heroine of this film and google doesn’t really help – was it Ameeta or Nalini Jaywant.? I also prefer to the other ‘road’ song – Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke, Humse Kuch na Boliye from Nau Do Gyarah.

  1. Ina Mina Dika – Film Aasha – Music: C.Ramchander, Lyrics: Rajendra Kishen. KK bringing rock & roll to India.

  1. Kissi Baat Par Mein Kissi Se Khafan Hoon – Film Bemisaal – Music – R.D.Burman, Lyrics : Anand Bakshi, and KK voicing for AB in a blue mood.

  1. Koi Hota Jisko Apna, Hum Apna Kehdete Yaron – Film Mere Apne . Music Salil Choudhary, Lyrics Gulzar. I haven’t seen this film but love the music totally.

  1. Kuch toh Log Kahenge – Film Amar Prem – Music R.D.Burman, Lyrics : Gulzar. And a world weary Rajesh Khanna singing to Sharmila Tagore. It is actually a toss up between this and the other KK solo in this film – Chingari Koi Badke

  1. Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahin – Film Paying Guest – Music S.D.Burman, Lyrics : Majrooh Sultanpuri. KK voicing for Dev Anand. The other great solo in this film is Haye Haye Haye Yeh Nigaahen

  1. Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Ayegi Tu – Film Aradhna – Music S.D.Burman, Lyrics Anand Bakshi and a song featured on Rajesh Khanna that not only catapulted him to super stardom, but it taught a whole generation of Indians how to fall in love. I prefer it to the other great KK solo in this film Roop tere Matana

  1. Meri Bhigi Bhigi Si —Film Anamika – Music R.D.Burman. Lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri. Song featured on a dapper looking Sanjeev Kumar singing to a guilty as hell Jaya Bhaduri.

  1. Rote Huve Aate Hai Sab, Hasta Huva Jo Jaayega – Film Muqadar Ka Sikandar – Music : Kalyanji Anandji, Lyrics, Anjan. KK redefining Machismo for a new generation. The song is featured on Amitabh Bachan driving a bike through the streets of Mumbai.

  1. Who Shyam Kuch Ajeeb Thi – Film Khamoshi – Music Hemant Kumar, Lyrics Gulazar. And Melancholy Magic.

  1. Yeh Joh Mohabbat Hai – Film Kati Patang – Music S.D.Burman, Lyrics : Anand Bakshi. KK voices for Rajesh Khanna. All I can remember of this song is a fully suited Rajesh Khanna sitting in the rain cross legged singing part of this song (or was it some other film?) The other two great KK solos in this film are Pyar Deewana Hota Hai Mastana Hota Hai, and Yeh Shyaam Mataani

  1. Zindagi Ke Safar Mein – Film Aap Ki Kasam – Music R.D. Burman, Lyrics Gulzar. Raga Shivaranjani and Kishore divine on the vocals. The song is a background number that is played on a Rajesh Khanna being miserable.

Which are yours ?

September 28th – The birthday of Lata Mangeshkar …. the woman with the golden voice. The first lady of Hindi film Music. For me, the last of the All India Radio generation , the lady and her music was a constant companion when I was growing up. Although in later years – i would think post the late 1980′s- her voice has lost much of the sweetness and melody, her body of work prior to that stands as testimony of her talent. On her birthday, I am going to take on a difficult task – the task of compiling my personal favourites sung by her. This is in no particular order of prefernce – just stuff that i enjoy listening to … the list will be divided into my favourite solo numbers & duets. Today is the list of the favourite solo numbers.

  • Barsaat Mein Humse Mile Tum Sajan – the all time classic. Lata and a chorus sing probably my favourite ‘falling in love’ song. Shailendra‘s lyrics are mind blowing ‘aaj mein tumhari huvi, tum mere sajan… tum mere sajan" and Shankar Jaikishen‘s music a herald of forthcoming greatness
  • Jago Mohan Pyare – from Jagte Raho – the sweetness and compassion in Lata’s voice, perfect with the melody by Salil Choudhary and lyrics by Prem Dhawan
  • Vande Mataram - from the film Ananda Math – Music by Hemant Kumar, Lyrics by Bankim Chandra Chaterjee. The ultimate call to battle song. Fight for this country, it is yours and so beautiful….And Lata’s rendition of this song makes it my favourite. It nudges out other ‘patriotic’ numbers like Ay Mere Vatan ke Logon…..
  • Jadugar Saaiya – from the film Nagin – a sweet love song, where the woman implores her lover to let her go as it is getting late. Hemant Kumar, Shailendra and Lata once again create magic.Saaware Saaware – from the film Anuradha. Music by Ravi Shankar and a breathless pace that transverses scale. Lata’s complete mastery of Raga’s and melodies comes to the forefront in this song.
  • Dua Kar Ghame Dil, Khuda se Duva Kar – from Anarkali. In a film full of great songs, including the popular ‘yeh zindagi usi ki hai’ – this song is my personal favourite. You can hear the duva in the voice.Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh – the film Dil Apna aur Preet Paraya – music by Shankar Jai Kishen, and the song filmed on Meena Kumari – with appropriate close ups of Raj Kumar and Nadira.
  • Aaj Phir Jeene ki Tamana Hai - the film Guide. A celebration of life. Picturised on Waheeda Rehman – a truly feminist song before the term feminist became popular in India
  • Kahi Deep Jale Kahi Dil - Music Director Madan Mohan, lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and a truly eerie number. For me, it works better as a ‘haunted’ song than Ayega Aanewal from Mahal and Aajare Pardesi from Madhumati.
  • Mora Gora Ang Laile – in my list of the most erotic songs in Hindi films ever. Lyrics by a very young Gulzar and music by Sachin Dev Burman
  • Nainon Mein Badra Chaaye – Film : Mera SayaLata & Madan Mohan – and an incredible semi classical composition. A superb rain song….
  • Choti, Choti si Baat — Film Choti Si Baat – music Salil Choudhary, lyrics Yogesh. A wistful song …Najane Kyon… hota hai yeh zindagi ke saath … achanak yeh dil .. .kissi ke jaane ke baad … kare phir uski yaad… choti choti si baat….na jane kyon…
  • Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare — Film Rajnigandha, Salil Chodhary, Yogesh and Lata Mangeshkar get together to create magic.
  • Mausam hai Ashiqana – superb wistfulness and longing in this song from Pakeezah. I personally prefer this song to the more popular ‘chalte chalte’ or ‘inhi logone’
  • Na Jiya Lage Na – Film Anand – Salil Choudhary, Gulzar and Lata Mangeshkar. A great combination of melody, lyrics and voice.
  • Doondho Re Doondho – Film Ganga Jamuna – music Naushad lyrics, Shakeel Badauni. The song picturised an ethereal looking Vyjanti Mala singing about the joys of ‘suhaag raat’ with Dilip Kumar
  • Raaton Ke Saaye Ghane- Film Annadata – music Salil Choudhary. I haven’t seen the film but it has a powerhouse of a sound track.
  • Ja Ja Re Jaa, Balamva – Film Basant Bahar. I can’t remember too much about the film except that it stars Bharat Bhushan and everyone dies . But the sound track on this is amazing, so is this song.
  • Bada Natkhat Hai Yeh – Film Amar Prem – filmed on Sharmila Tagore. the film also starred Rajesh Khanna. Music R.D.Burman, lyrics Anand Bakshi. The film also had the other wonderful Lata solo – Raina Beeth Jaaye….
  •

Which are yours.?
