Tomorrow on Dial One aur Jeeto – made by Cogito TV (my little bit of branding for my company) – is special guest Sanjay Jumani – the world famous nnuummerologgistt.
If you want to call the great man himself to find out if you need double alphabets in your name – call the numbers that are plastered everywhere :). Now that the plug for the show is done, the real reason for the post.
I was sitting at home getting bored out of my skull. Neena saved from a fate worse than boredom by asking me do do some research online for a few questions regarding numerology. The questions were done in a jiffy, but what was interesting was the set of sites I ended up discovering.
In my wanderings through cyberspace I came across this great site. It is called Godchecker. It introduces its’ services as:
We have more Gods than you can shake a stick at. Godchecker’s Mythology Encyclopedia currently features almost 2,500 deities.
Godchecker is 100% non-denominational. All Gods are welcome, whether Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Slavonic, or of No Fixed Abode. Polytheism is much more fun than monotonous monotheism. The Gods are queuing up to get in! And Terry Pratchett fans, Tolkien afficiandos, Douglas Adams devotees and Harry Potter nuts will love our selection of Goddities!
The Godchecker database aims to cover all Gods of mythology, literature and legend. Pagan culture is covered with Celtic deities and more Earth Mother Goddesses than you can shake a willow stick at. And if you’re seeking knowledge, wealth or immortality, you may pick up some tips. Our current research has led to some very promising ideas involving snails, beetroot and cunningly-shaped sticks…
And there was this completely brilliant and totally irreverent section here called Mythmatics – the Mythology of Numbers. . It looks at various numbers claimed by various cultures as being important to their Gods.
Ever since the human race began to count on the Gods, their numbers have increased. It is even possible the Gods are counting on mankind – using us for multiplication or dividing us into fractions.

I think that the next week is looking very promising indeed 🙂
someone obviously has a looot of time on her hands. “And if you’re seeking knowledge, wealth or immortality, you may pick up some tips.” So have you picked up any yet?!
time has got redefined. thankfully, its only till this week end. i can go back to my normal madness from the next.
neither wealth nor immortality – but a lot of useless knowledge. did you know that there was a hottentot god called Haiuri – who was half a god. he had half of everything.
or that the monstor uncegila can only be defeated in mortal combat if someone got to her 7th spot. I had a query on this – who figured that Uncegila was female 🙂
all this knowledge is going to be so useful 🙂
Eighteen. Gods such as DURGA who slay demons find this amount of arms to be the absolute minimum needed. – From the Myth/Mathology page
Lol at the absolute minimum reference. Seriously, Indian gods seem to take pleasure in the abnormal and the freaky.
We have elephant headed boys who ride rodents, monkeys who carry people, cannibalistic goddesses, pig-headed avatars, 6/5/4/3 headed warriors and as a basic requirement, all of them have 4 hands and 1000 weapons.
If I were a little less knowledgeable, I would be afraid to pray to them and afraid not to. :0)
i love this site too.
i remember one description where the verse describes the mother goddess as having the beautiful gait of a she elephant. knowing a smattering of sanskrit – i naturally cracked up. the priest was not amused 🙂
This is a fun link — thanks!
I wanna make up some weird gods, put it in a book and bury it. then there’l be some more weird gods to the list.
I’ve never watched this show. Does it have its own website?
Intriguing that pseudo-sciences like numerology are this popular in Indian media. I wonder what Indian media is doing to bring good science to the masses instead?
No. the channel hasn’t put up the website.
it is radio on television. call, answer questions win prizes.
you won’t believe how popular numerolgoy and other such mumbo jumbo is. there are shows dedicated to people who read tarot, numerology and so on.
as far as science is concerned nothing at all. news covers it a bit but badly. we get nat geo, discovery and the rest of the foreign channels with good science content. and many of them are dubbed into hindi or tamil.
but nothing Indian. The GoI had planned to launch a science channel called jigyasa but it is being handled by bureaucrats.
nice to see you back on this site.
