Hot on the heels of people turning up in thousands to drink the sea water (turned sweet) at Mahim creek, comes the story of a whole bunch of temples in MP having idols that turned into milk guzzlers.

What was a fairly localised bit of idiocy earlier, is now a viral meme infecting the whole country at a go. And, at a basic level the media instead of playing a ‘responsible’ role is ending up playing a ‘sensationalist’ role. There is no attempt by any reporter or newscaster to give a rational perspective. Its’ almost as though ‘God stuff’ is taking over as the prime mover of news. And the message is ‘watch us’ ‘watch us’ we get you the best miracles. From SMS prayers and wishes for little Prince stuck at the bottom of a well, to

“thousands have gathered here today to drink the water of Mahim creek which has turned sweet. People claim it is a miracle”

which probably lead thousands more to turn up at Mahim creek to sample unadultrated sludge, to the mela of the idols drinking milk that led to a

a rush to a temple in Kolkata’s Kidderpore area last night to offer milk to Shiva after TV channels beamed reports of the happening.

there seems to be a concerted effort by [tag]news media[/tag] to boost ratings at all cost. And I am afraid that this cost is going to be borne by society.

I am also afraid that if the news media in general, and news channels in particular – continue irresponsible behaviour in the name of ‘freedom of press’ – when all that they are doing is much the same as any other business, then the rules that appy to other businesses will start applying to the media. And, that will be a sad day for Indian society, the [tag]Indian media[/tag] and above all Indian democracy.
